We are slipping into some powerful darker days of the season. This time of year tugs at your roots anchoring you into the mysteries of what is yet to be revealed. Pulling you into stillness, darkness and to the feet of the Dark Mother.

It is Her cauldron that you tumble into during the darker days, and resistance will only create struggle. Her cauldron is like a centrifuge where you are stirred and stirred until what no longer serves you rises to the surface of the cauldron and the Dark Mother discards all the bits and pieces of the false self. And as she returns to her cauldron, continuing to stir, adding a few healing herbs, you begin your deep transformation and healing.

This year, the darker days are accompanied by several powerful moon phases and planetary positioning. Whatever you've clung onto, or perhaps ignored, or have been unable to "get clarity", the next several weeks carry the power of deep transformation.

There is no "doing" during this time. No making sense of what is happening. Just let yourself be taken.

I have found, that even though we may feel tossed about in the Dark Mother's cauldron, it's helpful to take the reigns in some sort of fashion. Not to try to control your experience, because that would be fruitless. But instead to ride the primal waves of change by fully embracing the experience. And having a guide, a partner or a messenger is very helpful.

So who is your guide? In Celtic traditions the Cailleach oversees the darker days, and like a wild, stormy wind, she blows into your life stripping you bare. There are also animals and birds that are great nighttime seers, like the owl, who are devoted guides during the darker days. They help YOU to see in the encroaching darkness.

I invite you to take some time this week and ask for a guide. Perhaps they will jump out from the underbrush as you walk down a forest trail. Or you'll hear them hooting, or maybe howling just before you drift off to sleep. Or maybe a strong wind will rush at you - a clear message that the Cailleach is here for you.

Blessings on your sacred journey into the darker days of the nature year.

The mugwort growing around our barn got massively tall, and the colors were sublime (at least to this colorblind guy!). Spent some time cleaning up the barn yard, consolidating the various beams and boards and sorting and organizing. It feels good to get things in shape after a busy summer of multiple timber frame projects. Just a few more frames to complete and then we will be in winter mode!

And I love the twist on this pumpkin stem.

I'm really looking forward to this weekend's Retreat.

Learning to make all kinds of tools, build shelters, make fire, carve wood and explore the forest as a tracker and gatherer is empowering, centering, renewing and energizing!

It brings me to a place where I can feel my feet on the ground, and my place on this earth in a way that helps me get my bearings in a world that is constantly changing and chaotic. It's about belonging and it works naturally....

It's Friday-Sunday, and we still have some openings!

Check out the details, and please let me know if you have questions.

Local/commuter rate is available if you don't need housing!

Families welcome, teens, etc!

When I think about living through a hurricane that became a geological event, I think about how everything I have worked on and built and thought about for decades could vanish in a few short hours of tree scouring winds or a million gallons of water moving at impossible speeds.

Living through these kinds of events are disorienting and traumatizing because our inner world, with our long held 'understanding' of how life works has been shaken to the core.

The comforting belief that many nature folks espouse that "Nature will never harm us if we learn to go with her Flow...." seems naive and trite when the reality of how small and insignificant we are in the face of withering heat, crushing drought, intense cold or so many other hazards found in our world.

Our culture provides an unconscious belief of our human security, because we are surrounded daily with evidence of how humans have dominated and controlled nature with concrete, with blacktop, with internal heating systems and air conditioning or any other 'environment altering technology'.

When this illusion is stripped away violently in a few hours, it's traumatizing, because the 'inner foundation' of how we have perceived the world is gone. Rebuilding that part of ourselves takes as much time or longer than the actual physical work of debris removal or roof repairs.

This episode is a first hand account of Grant Adkisson, who spent days preparing for Hurricane Helene and then living through it on his farm and nature program Corylace Cove in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Helene's fury was catastrophic to communities throughout the Carolinas and Tennessee, and Grant shares what it was like during the storm, and then discovering how this widespread event has been life changing for thousands of people throughout this region.

Grant talks about why he and his partner Sara chose to continue to offer nature education programs a week or so after the storm, when it was safe and communications and travel was possible, and how their work has adapted to support their emotional needs after experiencing the trauma that follows a natural disaster.

You can support these communities by finding their links in our show notes on your podcast player, or directly supporting Grant and Sara on their program's website.

Thank you for listening to Episode #142.

Sadly, it's already happening.

We are already transitioning to a new reality that will see the end of home insurance as we have come to know it in the last fifty years, and we are already seeing education at a crossroads, as well as healthcare and so much more.

There is still time to act, to keep things from getting even worse, and the time to connect and form strong community bonds at the local level is now.

The future involves shared local resources (like it was back in the 19th century), and local food production, to supplement what might be available 'commercially', and a major emphasis in elementary and middle school education to help students grow up with strong skills of leadership, problem solving, creative thinking, gardening, hand crafts, mechanics and more. It's an exciting time, if we can use the time we have before the next event to plant trees, create pastures, build community and not wait until it's too late...

One of the things I love about teaching these skills at this time of year is the fact that there are no mosquitoes, the campfires feel warm and welcome after the heat of the summer, and the newly fallen leaves make great shelter materials.

I also enjoy seeing someone learn five or six new carving techniques, or making fire for the first time, or tasting something cooked over the embers. It's a retreat from the frenzy of the modern world, and a time for us to connect to a more ancient rhythm.

The skills are authentic, and I can vouch for them personally, having used them in all kinds of situations and ecosystems.

No experience necessary, and I've taught all ages and skill levels, so come out for an experience that will last a lifetime.
