Soybean seed diseases are showing up across Iowa, which isn’t surprising considering the wet weather experienced in parts of the state over the past month. The rain is a double whammy for farmers this time of year as it favors continued fungal development and keeps combines from getting in the field. Some of the primary seed diseases showing up are purple seed stain and Diaporthe seed decay.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, older adults reported losing more than $3 billion to fraud in 2025. The Stay Independent: Spot, Stop and Report Fraud program on Tuesday October 27 will focus on teaching adults what frauds and scams are, why the older population is a target, warning signs for common frauds and scams, and ways to protect yourself from fraud and scams.

The program is geared towards adults 60+ and/or their caregivers and will be offered in three different time slots to allow attendees to choose the time that works best for them. Session times include: Morning 10-11 AM, Afternoon 3-4 PM, or Evening 5:30-6:30 PM at the Sioux County Extension Office,400 Central Ave. NW, Suite 700, Orange City, IA 51041 on October 27.

This program is offered at no cost to you thanks to the Sioux County Extension District. Pre-registration is required by October 23, call the Sioux County Extension office at 712-737-4230 to register.
