Our Tsalagi Gawonihisdi intern!

“Riding hasn’t been as difficult as I imagined it would be, being the second 55-mile day we’ve done in a row I think we’ve kept up pretty well. As far as leading though, leading has been more difficult I think just because a few days ago our team pretty much doubled in size, and so it’s a little more challenging having to put in the focus that it requires to navigate a team that’s so large in a terrain that is unfamiliar. I think what has stuck out the most to me is when we went to our sort of exile capital Red Clay, Tennessee, yesterday, and we all went to the eternal flame and had a good talk. I think it stuck out to me because what (RTR cyclist) Bo (Taylor) had to say sort of made me understand that Cherokee culture and Cherokee ways of life transcend beyond the dark history that we’ve had in the past few hundred years. Just looking at the eternal flame and being all together makes me realize even though we’re retracing the Trail of Tears and trying to relive part of our history that was so negative, it’s still good to see, that despite all of our setbacks, we are still able to be here as one.” Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians citizen and 2018 “Remember the Removal” bike rider Nolan Arkansas on his experience so far.
