What does a giant yellow bus with flashing red lights and a big red STOP sign sticking out of the side mean?
If you said STOP, you nailed it!
When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, children may be getting on, getting off, or crossing the roadway. They’re trusting the adults behind the wheel to see them, slow down, and stop.
Our YES Officers work throughout the Cheney School District, and it’s a BIG district. We can’t be everywhere at once! And keeping our students safe takes all of us.
So when you see those flashing red lights:
· Stop for the bus.
· Watch for kids.
· Put the distractions down.
· Be patient.
The buses are big, bright yellow, with flashing lights, and they even brought their own STOP sign. All we need from you is a little patience.
And if you need one more reason to stop: passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing can result in a $433 traffic infraction under RCW 46.61.370.
We can think of a lot more fun ways to spend $433!
Our Youth Engagement Specialist (YES) program is about more than having officers in our schools. It’s about building relationships and creating strong partnerships between law enforcement, the Cheney School District staff, students, families, and the community we serve.
Our YES Officers are only one piece of that partnership. When our schools, families, officers, and community all work together and look out for one another, we can help keep our children and our entire community safer.
Please do your part. Stop for the bus, watch out for our students, and help us make sure everyone gets home safely.
