I’ll never forget speaking to the coroner. The shock and disbelief and horror as he said those words to me. A storm of a thousand questions drenched me in that moment. Confusion flooded my brain with images of my brother laying lifeless in the county coroners office. It felt like sorrow was a literal hand that reached around my ribcage, squeezing every bone until they snapped and stabbed my heart, one by one.
“Someone needs to claim him.” hurt more than any words I’d ever heard.

I knew it was coming, I could feel the looming grip of psychosis and fear of losing the battle overwhelming him as he slipped further into his episode over those last six months. In the end the death certificate read “accidental overdose by Fentanyl ”. Really that was a 3 second choice of escapism from a lifetime of hell.

It was death by Bipolar. This is how it happens.

Everyone in our family lost to bipolar in those three seconds.
