Mutual Respect Across Thousands of Miles | A Wutan Bond from Taiwan to Boston

有些武林情誼，即使相隔萬里，只要見面，一聲稱呼，便知道彼此的根在哪裡。

此次韓基祥師父赴美參加武術賽事，隨後前往波士頓探親訪友。波士頓武壇負責人 Jorge Perez 得知韓師父來到美國後，也特地前來拜會，一敘同門情誼。

而韓師父與 Jorge 之間，其實有著一段深厚的武壇淵源。

韓基祥師父一生所習武藝，除了承襲家傳韓門武學之外，其中相當一部分，是由姑丈 梁紀慈大師 親自傳授。

梁紀慈大師為武壇劉雲樵宗師的開門大弟子。也因為這一層師門淵源，Jorge 始終依循武術界的傳統，以「師叔」稱呼韓師父。

對韓師父而言，彼此因武結緣、情誼相投，從來不需要特別在意輩分；但對 Jorge 而言，這一聲「師叔」，不是為了區分高低，而是對師承與武門傳統的一份尊重。

而這份緣分，也不只停留在一聲稱呼之上。

過去 Jorge 曾遠赴台灣，向戴士哲師爺習藝。旅台期間，他也特地抽空拜訪韓師父。難得同門相聚，自然少不了談拳論武、切磋交流，Jorge 也藉此機會向韓師父學習韓門獨到的擒拿技術。

從擒拿手法、身法步法，到控制、轉化與實際運用，一招一式之間，不只是武藝上的交流，也讓原本因師門而牽起的緣分，又多了一份授藝與問學的情誼。

昔日，Jorge 從美國來到台灣，在隨師爺習藝之餘，與韓師父相聚問藝；
如今，韓師父遠赴美國，Jorge 得知韓師父來到波士頓，也特地前來相聚。

一來一往，相隔萬里。

談的是武藝，續的是情誼，牽起的，卻是幾代武人一路傳承至今的那條武脈。

有趣的是，兩人相處時，韓師父總是不太在意這些輩分，常常笑著對 Jorge 說：

「我們是兄弟。」

但 Jorge 卻總是認真地回答：

「師叔就是師叔。」

一句「我們是兄弟」，是韓師父不拘輩分的親切；
一句「師叔就是師叔」，則是 Jorge 對傳統師承與武門倫理的尊重。

兩句話看似不同，說的其實是同一份情誼——

親近，不忘禮；
情深，不忘本。

或許，這也正是傳統武術最動人的地方。

「傳承」從來不只是一張師承表，也不只是記錄誰曾經跟誰學過什麼。

真正的傳承，是多年以後，即使走到了世界的另一端，仍然記得自己的武藝從何而來；見到同門前輩，依然記得師承，也珍惜彼此因這條武脈而結下的緣分。

從劉雲樵宗師，到梁紀慈大師；
從前輩一代代的授藝，到今日跨越台灣與美國的相聚。

武術讓原本相隔萬里的人，因共同的武脈而相連；也讓前人傳下來的，不只是拳與技，更有人與人之間的情義，以及對師承與傳統的敬重。

所以，一聲「師叔」，看似只是一個簡單的稱呼。

它說的不是誰的輩分比較高，也不是誰的身分比較重要，而是彼此都沒有忘記，這份武緣，從何而來。

感謝 Jorge Perez 得知韓師父來到美國後，特地前來相聚。

昔日在台灣，以擒拿問藝；
今日在波士頓，以同門再聚。

江湖雖遠，武脈相連；
人在四方，師承不忘。

Some bonds in the martial arts transcend distance. Even when separated by thousands of miles, the moment two people meet, a single form of address can reveal the roots they share.

During Master Han Jixiang’s recent trip to the United States to participate in a martial arts competition, he later traveled to Boston to visit family and friends. Upon learning that Master Han was in the U.S., Jorge Perez, who leads the Wutan martial arts community in Boston, made a special trip to meet him and renew their bond as members of the same martial family.

The connection between Master Han and Jorge actually runs deep within the Wutan tradition.

Throughout his martial arts journey, Master Han Jixiang not only inherited his family’s Han-style martial arts, but also learned a significant portion of his skills directly from his uncle by marriage, Grandmaster Liang Jici.

Grandmaster Liang Jici was the first disciple of Wutan Grandmaster Liu Yunqiao. Because of this connection within the martial lineage, Jorge has always followed the traditional customs of the martial arts community and addressed Master Han as “Shishu” (師叔, martial uncle).

For Master Han, the two were brought together through martial arts and share a genuine friendship, so he has never felt the need to place much emphasis on seniority. For Jorge, however, calling him “Shishu” is not about establishing who ranks above whom. Rather, it is an expression of respect for lineage and the traditions of the martial family.

And their connection goes far beyond a title.

Years ago, Jorge traveled to Taiwan to study with his Shiye (師爺), Master Dai Shizhe. During his stay, he also made time to visit Master Han. With members of the same martial family together, it was only natural that they would talk about martial arts, exchange techniques, and train together. Jorge also took the opportunity to learn Han Style’s distinctive Qin Na techniques from Master Han.

From Qin Na methods and body mechanics to footwork, control, transitions, and practical applications, every technique they exchanged represented more than martial skill alone. Their shared lineage had brought them together, and through teaching, learning, and exchange, that bond grew even deeper.

Years ago, Jorge traveled from the United States to Taiwan and, while studying with his Shiye, spent time exchanging martial knowledge with Master Han.

Today, Master Han has traveled to the United States, and when Jorge learned that he was in Boston, he once again made a special effort to meet him.

Two journeys, in opposite directions, across thousands of miles.

They talked about martial arts and renewed their friendship, but what truly connected them was a martial lineage passed down through generations.

Interestingly, Master Han himself has never placed much importance on seniority when spending time with Jorge. He often smiles and says:

“We are brothers.”

But Jorge always replies with sincerity:

“Shishu is Shishu.”

When Master Han says, “We are brothers,” it reflects the warmth and closeness he feels beyond formal seniority.

When Jorge insists, “Shishu is Shishu,” it reflects his respect for traditional martial lineage and the relationships within the martial family.

The two statements may sound different, but they express the same bond:

Close in friendship, yet never forgetting respect;
deep in brotherhood, yet never forgetting our roots.

Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful aspects of traditional martial arts.

Lineage is never merely a chart of names, nor simply a record of who learned what from whom.

True transmission means that even many years later, when you find yourself on the other side of the world, you still remember where your martial arts came from. When you meet a senior member of the same martial family, you remember the lineage and treasure the bond created through that shared martial heritage.

From Grandmaster Liu Yunqiao to Grandmaster Liang Jici;
from the teachings passed down through generations to today’s reunion across Taiwan and the United States.

Martial arts connect people separated by thousands of miles through a shared lineage. And what our predecessors pass down is not merely forms and techniques, but also friendship, mutual respect, and reverence for the lineage and traditions from which we came.

So the simple word “Shishu” may appear to be nothing more than a title.

But it is not about who holds a higher rank or whose status is more important. It simply means that neither has forgotten where this martial bond began and the lineage that brought them together.

Our sincere thanks to Jorge Perez for making the special trip to meet Master Han after learning that he was in the United States.

Years ago in Taiwan, they connected through Qin Na and the exchange of martial knowledge;
today in Boston, they reunite through the bond of their shared lineage.

Though the martial world is vast, the lineage keeps us connected;
wherever we may go, we never forget where our teachings came from.
