What great question’s ❤️

“How was school?” often gets a one-word answer: “Fine.”

But a child can have had a brilliant moment, a friendship wobble, a hard lesson, a playground worry, or something they are really proud of, all in the same day.

Sometimes a small change in the question opens the door.

Try asking:
“What made you laugh today?”
“Who did you spend time with?”
“What was the hardest bit?”
“Did anything feel unfair?”
“What are you proud of?”

You do not need to turn every afternoon into a big chat. One gentle question in the car, over dinner or at bedtime can let a child know you are there to listen, even when they do not have the words straight away.

This is so true.
And it takes lots of practice to learn how not to do it. And it doesn’t mean you’ll always get it correct. It means keep practicing. 😊
