Hello Phlebotomy Friends!
If you could have anything you wanted in a mobile phlebotomy cart, what would it be? After seeing a post about a phlebotomy cart a couple of days ago I decided to do some research and see what options are available for mobile phleb carts - surprise, there are very few options besides cosmetic carts.

Maybe the Center for Phlebotomy Education could help fill this gap with an affordable custom phlebotomy cart designed to be taken on the road and into peoples homes while protecting sample integrity and being easy to carry.

Tell me how you would like your dream cart to function! I included a picture of a cart that apparently was once available on the market, but no longer.

Some things I have already heard:
-Wheels and a handle
-Pullout drawers like the one in the picture
-Needs to be lockable
-A foldout table or shelf to rest supplies
-A waterproof bottom drawer where icepacks can be placed to keep samples cold (or warm).

Tell me what you want, and maybe we can make the most amazing cart ever.

Day five of Phlebotomists Recognition Week.

It's the last day of an amazing week dedicated to my favorite group of people. Phlebotomists.

Everything that I have posted this week has been a tribute to their work, and I have only scraped the surface of all the amazing qualities and talents of phlebotomists.

Thank you all for everything you do. I know it can seem like no one appreciates your work, but we do, and we know how important you are. Please keep up the good work, and please always be kind and support one another. Phlebotomists need all the love they can get.

Phlebotomists are the BEST.

Day 4 of Phlebotomists Recognition Week.

Phlebotomists have a higher risk of experiencing an accidental blood exposure during their career. Most phlebotomists are fully educated on the increased risks as a student, and yet they choose to do their job knowing that they have a decent chance of a blood exposure at some point.

Any little jump or unexpected movement from a patient can cause an injury to a phlebotomist. Just the constant handling of needles is a high risk. Some phlebotomists draw blood from 50+ people a day, and every time they begin the procedure there is a chance that it will cause an injury to themselves.

Phlebotomists are aware of the risks, and continue to do their jobs anyway. It takes a special type of person to be willing to work in such a demanding and dangerous field, and it's just another reason why phlebotomists are so special.

Becoming nationally certified often comes with a pay raise, and will increase your chance of being hired over other applicants. It is an excellent way to prove your knowledge of phlebotomy.

Day 3 of Phlebotomists Recognition Week.

Every decision a phlebotomist makes during the blood collection procedure can affect the accuracy of the blood test results. Patients have died because of mistakes like not labeling the tubes at the patient's bedside, or not following the order of draw.

Phlebotomists who understand the impact that they can have on the diagnosis and treatment of a patient are worth their weight in gold. Every time they draw blood they are ensuring that the physician will have accurate test results they can trust.

People who think drawing blood is a simple procedure do not understand all of the preanalytical variables that can destroy accuracy. It's another reason why phlebotomists are amazing, and a critical part of the healthcare team.

It's day 2 of Phlebotomists Recognition Week!

Phlebotomists travel back and forth, up and down, and into every last corner of inpatient areas of the hospital. They go to almost every department and collect blood from every type of patient. They may get to one end of the hospital only to be sent to the opposite immediately, and then back again.

They have to walk more than most other healthcare workers, and they aren't just walking, they are hustling. Speed-walking to get to the patient in the ICU who needs a STAT test, and then heading to med-surg for a timed specimen, and then to the ER for a set of blood cultures.

They get yelled at if they take too long, and they get yelled at if they seem rushed when they interact with their patients. They are expected to collect their samples from a patient and be out of their room in less than 5 minutes, only to hustle off to the next order.

Phlebotomists are incredible, and they put up with a lot. Maybe treat a phlebotomist that you know to a pedicure. I know they would appreciate it!

Day 1 of Phlebotomists Recognition Week.
A Phlebotomy student is a pin cushion for weeks before they graduate from their program. They deal with pain, bruising, fear, shaky hands and nervous newbie classmates.
Even with all these risks, any students are less scared of what may happen to themselves, and are more scared to cause pain to others. Every stick is a pressure-filled stressful experience while they hone their skills until they are confident in themselves.
Many people don't realize what it takes to become a phlebotomist. Even nursing students don't practice these skills on each other like phlebotomy students do. A phlebotomist is someone who has sacrificed to earn their title, and they don't take it lightly.
