UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center Challenger Center for Space Science Education offers dynamic, hands-on exploration and discovery opportunities to students around the world.

The UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center is a member of the National Challenger Center Network that has 45 centers located in the United States, Great Britain, South Korea and Canada. The Challenger Centers were built as a living memorial for the crew of the Challenger Space Shuttle mission that ended in tragedy in January of 1986. Their mission was one of education with the first teacher β€œChristie

MCauliffe” being a member of the crew. Today that education mission still lives in the Challenger Centers where students can explore hands-on science, technology, engineering and math programs. The UTC Challenger Center opened in 1994 and was the first center integrated with a University Campus. It is formally aligned under the College of Education and has formed a strong relationship with the UTC Teachers Preparation Academy, the Hamilton County School System, and many other public and private educational entities.The Challenger programs serves approximately 8000 students and several hundred teachers each year in a service area that includes Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Programs include simulated space missions that reinforce and introduce students to real-world applications of STEM principles, summer camps, teacher professional development workshops, and team building sessions for businesses and other organizations.

Homeschool families, we're building something for you.

The UTC Challenger STEM Learning Center is launching monthly Homeschool Days, and we want your input before we lock the schedule.

Here's the problem we're solving. Most field trips assume one classroom, one grade, thirty kids. Homeschool families don't work that way. You might have three children spanning five grade levels, a co-op of eight, or a group of forty. So we're designing a day that fits how you actually learn: mixed ages together, small groups welcome, hands on from the first minute.

Your crew could build and launch rockets, model the phases of the moon, run a mission in our space simulator, or program robots. We need to know which of those appeals most, and just as importantly, when you can actually get here.

πŸš€ Earth's atmosphere is a wonderful blanket for life, but for astronomers trying to view the distant universe, it acts like a dirty window. That all changed when the Hubble Space Telescope was carried into orbit above the blurring effects of our air.

πŸ”­ By placing a mirror outside the atmosphere, scientists unlocked a view that had never been possible from the ground. Pointing Hubble at what looked like a completely empty patch of sky revealed the famous Deep Field image, showing thousands of galaxies that had been hidden in the dark. It is much like standing at Rock City and looking across the Scenic City on a perfectly clear autumn morning, where every detail of the valley comes into sharp focus.
