Our studio trees made it to Erlanger Children’s Hospital! Over 150 tiny trees have been given so far. When I dropped off our decorated trees, I witnessed a family and a little patient being discharged and taking their tree home with them. Heartwarming!

One reason I look forward to seeing all the students together in these annual concerts is to witness the progress, not just in my own students but my colleagues students as well. Onward and upward! Many thanks to Summit Pianos and Buddy Shirk and the Downtown Chattanooga Public Library. 📚

After a long first week back at school my Saturday students were exhausted and droopy. Amazing results with the balance board! It’s just one of many kinetic exercises that grounds, straightens, and lengthens that I use in my teaching.

Wonderful summer term efforts and now it’s time to gear up for school and regular lessons. Fall lessons begin August 12! It’s been a lovely time away but I’m ready to return to seeing all of my students weekly.

It is nice to see that I’ve rubbed off on my students.
Today: Upon asking my student to share some wisdom with a younger student after they eagerly performed for them (overlap in lessons) she replied with an observation about how well the young student was playing the pick up note at the lower half of the bow. Why this is significant to me is the student could easily had led with advice about extending her bow to get to the tip again and helping her tone. She chose to lead with a well deserved compliment.
I teach my students to observe keenly and lead with authentic (factual) positive reactions/ comments, helpful solutions or approaches next, and if they can’t think of anything to say then to ask the performer a question about the music or playing in general.
If we all were this thoughtful in our exchanges the world would be vastly more positive. Do you agree?

Who says you can’t play sports and violin at a serious level? I think there’s a great connection between playing sports and music. My sports obsessed students often hear me speak about the correlation during lessons. I think it’s a key component to keep the mind and body connected through movement.
