Dear Lookout Valley Family,
Life has a way of being challenging, especially when things don’t work out quite the way we expected. For a long time, being the Principal of Lookout Valley Elementary has been my dream. I wanted to do this for as long as I possibly could. However, my body is currently making it difficult for me to fulfill my duties with the joy and energy you all deserve.
I have always promised myself—and you—that I would give 110% every day. My students and staff deserve nothing less. While my body has been telling me to slow down for some time, my heart and soul refused to accept that reality until now. Because I can no longer meet that personal standard due to ongoing health challenges, I will be taking a medical leave of absence, and I will be resigning as your Principal at the end of this school year.
My connection to this community is lifelong. I lived here (Lookout Valley) for the first 11 years of my life. After moving to rural Alabama in 1994, I saw firsthand the educational inequalities that exist in our country. That experience lit a fire in me for public education that has burned since. I returned to serve this community on February 2, 2002, at the Nazarene Daycare (now Sweet Magnolia Learning Academy) and have been here ever since—as a student teacher, teacher, RTI coordinator, instructional coach, and for the last nine years, your Principal.
Please do not take your health or your time on this earth for granted. I consider myself incredibly rich because of the relationships I have built with you. My goal has always been to:
Treat every person I encounter the way I would want to be treated.
Leave every classroom or school better than I found it.
This is the hardest decision I have ever made, but I am listening to my body’s call. I am not leaving the field of education—I am simply changing how I serve so that I can be around for many years to come.
Thank you for allowing me to lead you, for trusting me with your children, and for being the best community a leader could ask for. Please be on the lookout for an announcement sharing who will serve as our Interim Principal as well as information related to the process for selecting our new Principal.
With deep love and gratitude,
Nikki Bailey, PrinciPAL
