The "Whole Language" versus "Phonics" debate is just silly! Children need exposure to phonics knowledge & great literature! In fact, children need exposure to phonics while reading great literature!

Can your child count to two?
Does your child enjoy Hidden Pictures?
Together, search for two-letter words on any page of their favorite book! Make it a game! How many two-letter words can we find together?
I see 4 of them, no 5, wait...6 two letter words! Wow!

WORD of the DAY is fun to do!!!

1. Choose F, L, M, N, R or S for the first letter*.
2. Pick a vowel for the 2nd letter.
3. Choose B, P, D, or T for the last letter

You'll make a "word" you can pronounce!! It might be a real word or it could be a Dr. Seuss style word. Either way we can sound it out and have fun talking about it!!

*note: F, L, M, N, R and S are great letters to start with because when you say the name of these special letters you end up making the sound of the letter! Try it! Say "F" and hold out the end sound. You are saying fffffffffffffff which is the sound the letter "F" usually makes!

We used letter stickers out into 3 boxes labeled "1" "2" and "3"
You could also use boxes with traffic light colors: green to start, yellow for the middle and red to end the word.

You can also use letter stamps or even set up letter blocks someplace. I like the stickers or stamps that you can put right on the calendar.
