It's CAVE WEEK! Did you know that Tennessee has more caves than any other state? Caves are part of much of Tennessee and they can also be associated with other features such as springs and sinkholes. The study of caves is important to Tennessee and to the Chattanooga community. We are excited that we have our own cave classroom to study at Raccoon Mountain Caverns and can use it to train our students on the science of caves and cave environments so that we can make better decisions for our community. The US map shows caves in the U.S. where each dot represents a cave, the red star is Chattanooga! Image is from Culver et al., 1999. Check out this opportunity! Put in your application today!

The Scientists in Parks (SIP) program officially opens applications TODAY, May 11 for the winter cohort!

Every year, SIP places hundreds of college students, recent grads, and early-career professionals in national parks across the country to support real-world natural resource projects. One position might have you mapping sand dunes at Fire Island National Seashore, surveying towering cacti at Saguaro National Park, or helping protect nesting sea turtles at Padre Island National Seashore 🐢🌵🌊

No two positions are the same, but every experience is built to help launch the next generation of scientists, conservationists, and public land stewards.

If you’re exploring careers in STEM or land management, this is your sign to apply 👀

Now that the semester is winding down, it's a good time to reflect on the exciting learning opportunities provided in our geology courses this semester. From cave crawling to density measuring and from hunting rubies to discussing the Sequatchie Valley... It's been a wonderful semester and we look forward to the next!
