The open call is for love letters of any kind: lyrics, poetry, prose, photos, songs, text messages— to anyone or anything. The love letters will be shown publicly with names and addresses redacted as part of a love letter altar for the Love Is Strong As Death show. The letters will be read aloud and burned in a public vigil for the show’s closing event on November 14. Letters can be emailed to [email protected], texted to 423.451.6568, or snail mailed to Adrian Wood c/o Stove Works, 1250 E 13th St, Chattanooga TN 37408.
More about the show: Love Is Strong As Death asks audiences what they think love is, and what that means for how they live. Through works on paper and public programming, the show invokes love’s power for radical personal transformation and its wide-spanning political and social implications. The exhibition combines works on paper, a participatory installation, a lending library, public conversation, and live radio.
The works include intaglio prints of quotations on love’s radical potential, drawing from bell hooks, James Baldwin, Sappho, and others. I have developed an experimental gunpowder-based printing ink for these prints, making literal a militant love that burns through fear, hierarchy, and enclosure. A lending library in the gallery will gather the books behind the exhibited texts for visitors to peruse during their visit.
The exhibition will open on October 2 at Stove Works with a public salon exploring love’s capacity to disrupt hierarchy and nourish growth.
