🎓 Grad spotlight: Olivia Lane

Help us congratulate the psychology major! 👏

Why live on: “Students get the opportunity to share special experiences and make memories that they only can in a place like these residence halls.”

Favorite memory: “My favorite memory living on campus was when my friends and I played pool and ping pong in the Aviary or when we sat outside in the Boling courtyard at night and just talked.“

Favorite housing program: “My favorite housing program was the Pothos Party. It was a program that an RA i worked with my first year did with me and I’ve made it a tradition to host the same program every spring!”

Favorite building: “I’ve been an RA in Stagmaier, West Campus, and Guerry! My favorite will always be stag because it was my first home here at UTC.”

What she loves about UTC: “I love how much opportunity there is at UTC to find your place. There are so many clubs and organizations that residents can turn to, and I’m so happy to be a resident assistant. It’s truly changed me to be the best version of myself, and I’m so blessed to have met the amazing people I have over the years.”

Who was instrumental in her sucess: “Dr. Walker was crucial to my success at UTC with her mentoring me as a TA and research assistant in her lab!”

Favorite class: Plagues and Peoples

Favorite professor: Dr. Walker

Who made her feel at home at UTC: “Housing and Residence Life. Being an RA and going from staff to staff was like finding new little families of people that make UTC feel like home.”

Advice for new mocs: “My advice for new mocs would be to enjoy every moment with your friends, because you might not realize it but you are making some of your favorite memories right now. You never know how much some of these people will mean to you. Put yourself out there! It will pay off—it did for me.”

Post-grad plans: “After graduation, I will be continuing my journey at UTC in the School Psychology Ed.S. program this Fall!”

🎓 Grad spotlight: Julian Childress

Help us congratulate the business management and human resource management double major! 👏👏

Favorite memory: “My favorite memories come from my friends cooking late night breakfast in our dorm and fellowshipping together.”

What he’ll miss: “I’ll miss seeing my friends every day. They are my family and we turned our life at UTC into a sitcom.”

RLC experience: “Before I started as an RA in West, I was a part of the Business RLC. I enjoyed being around people I could network with and ask advice from regarding my major.

Advice for sharing a space: “I would say embrace this change. Rooming with someone other than your sibling is a big step in adulthood which requires communication and maturity, so try to keep an open mind when you’re sharing your space with other people.”

Who was instrumental in his success: “There are several people who were instrumental in my success. First, my friend group, BBB. This was the family that I gained after being away from mine for so long. I also want to highlight Dr. Jason Hartville and Dr. Courtney Buford—not only did they help me navigate professionalism at UTC, they’ve always been there for me.”

Favorite class: “Introduction to African Studies”

Favorite professor: “Dr. Michael Williams”

Organizations that made you feel at home at UTC: “In my fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., I found the brothers that I always wanted, and they kept me from feeling alone on this campus. I love each and every one of my brothers and I thank God for placing them in my life. Watching us grow, and watching them grow, makes my heart full and I’m extremely proud of them.”

Advice for his freshman self: “If I could give advice to my freshman myself, I’d say don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t accept failure but embrace it and always follow the positive vibes. Make your life all about peace and lessons.”

Post-grad plans: “I’m looking to stay at UTC and obtain my MBA in data analytics. Additionally, I’ve accepted a position within Housing where I’ll be Palmetto’s new assistant grad RD.”

🎓 Grad spotlight: Justin Straus

Help us congratulate the BSBA-Accounting and BSBA-Finance double major. 👏

Favorite memory: “One of my favorite things from living on campus was a month of Friday nights during my sophomore year. I very rarely play video games, but someone told my friend and I to play a cooperative game together where we each play our own character for the entirety of the story. We decided to give it a try. ... Harrison and I would log on and get sucked into this game because of how well-written and interactive the story was. We would start at 10 pm, blink, and it would be 1:30 am. On the last Friday of the month, we finished the game, and I let out a loud, “Noooo!” because of how the story wrapped. I could hear him on the other end of the phone having the same reaction. My roommates came rushing into my room, saw what I was playing, nodded understandingly, asked me to quiet down, and walked out.”

Who was instrumental in his success at UTC: “First and foremost, my immediate family, Marc, Stacy, and Jordan Straus. Following them, my best friends, Hunter Armstrong, Harrison Bean, Joshua Lovett, Carson Hammond, Omari Franklin, and Paul Jones. ... Faculty and staff members Jaclyn York, Joanie Sompayrac, Christi Wann, Susan Poss, Kim Thomas, Michael Jones, and Robert Dooley! Without them, I would not be where I am today!”

Orgs that made him feel at home: “The College of Business’ Beta Alpha Psi helped me feel most at home because it resembled a major-specific honor society, so I was in it with highly driven, intelligent, and like-minded students.”

Advice for new mocs: “You will make friends, I promise! If you are like me, you may be a bit introverted and not like certain things. This may limit the number of friends you make, but this is OKAY because the friends you do make will be friends you have for a LIFETIME. I met THREE of my closest friends during my four years at UTC. ... I could not imagine my life without them!”

Post-grad plans: “I will be attending the UTK for their Master of Accountancy program. I aim to obtain my CPA license and work in the professional sports and entertainment industry.”
