Mr. Fowler discussed creek etiquette with our preschool 4’s, then the young Seahawks explored Friar Branch, careful to respect the creek and its critters. Afterward, the teachers had their classes do water color painting in their nature journals using creek water. How fun!

Mr. Knapp’s middle school science class participated in a scavenger hunt at Friar Branch, searching for items of various lengths to be measured in both metric and imperial units and observing the unit comparisons. What better way to engage students than “making” them look for creek critters!!

Coach Bates’ SOAR Class took their first outdoor excursion today, hiking from historic Cravens House to scenic Sunset Rock. Students enjoyed jaw-dropping overlooks, soaring rock faces, and impressive natural trail features while learning some local Civil War history along the way. The fresh air and exercise left everyone feeling great at the end of the school day! (The most picturesque of these photos were taken by our talented students!)

Now that the weather has begun to grow a little cooler, more and more classes are going outside to do classwork or other assignments. Just being outdoors makes learning more enjoyable and students have more space to spread out to work at one of our dozens of outdoor learning zones. Not every classroom has four walls!

Third graders prepared to read Patricia MacLachlan’s _Sarah, Plain and Tall_ by participating in a value line activity. As teachers read statements connected to themes in the book, students moved to the “agree” or “disagree” side of the line and then justified their thinking. It is wonderful to see our students enjoying critical thinking, evaluating ideas, and respectfully sharing their perspectives, all while soaking up some fresh air!

Our SOAR Staff begins each school year with creek etiquette presentations for preschool and elementary school students. Each lesson is thoughtfully curated for the students’ age level, with the educational depth growing as they do. On Friday, we had the opportunity to spend the morning with our fourth graders learning about all the amazing critters that call Friar Branch Home! We love seeing our Seahawks outside, learning, exploring and growing in their appreciation for God‘s creation. 

We can’t wait to SOAR with you this school year! Come see us for ideas, resources, and fun!
