The last few months of Spanish and Library have been busy and fun!

In Spanish we had the World’s Fair Zoo, traveled to Chile and Ecuador, and competed in the Olympics for our review, among many other activities!

In the library, May is Poetry Month! Check out color quotes from our HVCS poets on our Poet Tree. We learned about being a good sport from “The Big Cheese”. 3rd-5th graders also read around the world and collected stamps from their literary travels.

It has been a fabulous year! Thank you for sharing your kiddos with me, we have had many great adventures!

Fifth grade held the second annual HVCS Lemonade War during lunch today. Their plans were decidedly fancier than last year, with frozen lemonade, slinkies, cookies, chips, and watermelon all being offered. The teams even had matching outfits! It was very close, but the boys’ team retained its title as Lemonade War champion!

FROM THE P.E. CHAIR: In 1985, I took my last education class. In August of 2025, I taught my first one. Next week I'll teach the last one for the year with hopes of doing it again.

Before next week comes, there are some thank you’s to deliver. Some that will be smaller than they need be & one nowhere near big enough.

To Mrs.Howell for giving me the opportunity to teach PE & be the HVCS athletics director. To the board for supporting her decision. To the faculty, all of them, that took in a rookie & made him feel welcome to the point he got to sub a few days & guest teach a social studies lesson or two. To Mr. Rick for his help setting up & tearing down basketball game days & working the clock in between. To Chef Jordan, who helped with postgame basketball & saved me & Mr. Rick from late dinners. And to the students of HVCS, for making PE a joy, filled a missing puzzle piece in my soul at athletic events, invited me to their table at lunch & made me a better human.

And now to Miss Amber & the thank you that's not big enough. In between drying tears, taking roll, calming crises, & being the glue & Swiss Army knife keeping everything from coming together, she has been my rock. Countless times I've stood at her door, lost with my laptop in hand. She's taught me to run a laminator, to get my AD contacts into one list, listened & spoken in a way that only someone who has your back does & a thousand other things & I'm privileged to call her friend outside of the walls of HVCS.

To all of you, thank you for a great 2025-26, have a great summer, & I'll see you in August!

Coach Mike

For the 2nd semester of PE, the students of 1st-5th grades had a competition. It was called The Ice Cream Cup (like the Stanley Cup or Premier League trophy but way cooler). Each week 20 points were available based on participation, teamwork & attitude. The race was tight. A total of 260 points was available & the 4th grade came in with 259 barely edging out the other 4 grades. They will be the recipients of an ice cream party on Friday as keepers of the Cup. Congratulations Jacob, Austin, Owen, Addelyn, Ethan, Lauren, James, Stonie, Alec, & Natalie! Well done to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 5th grades!

What started as one athlete’s desire for an opportunity and a vision to expand athletics at HVCS has officially become the beginning of our track program.

Despite a late start and many logistical challenges, Lauren courageously competed as our very first track athlete and laid an incredible foundation for the future. At last Friday’s conference championships, she earned 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes—helping HVCS place 8th overall as a team of one.

Thank you to Lauren for her hard work and pioneering spirit, and to her family for their support throughout this journey. We are proud to announce that next season, HVCS will officially offer a full track program!

Well done, Lauren!
