🌿 Forest School is heading to Climate Week NYC!

What does Forest School have to do with climate action?

We believe it starts with relationship.

When children have opportunities to truly know the natural world, to explore it, learn from it, care for it, and see themselves as part of it, connection grows. And that connection can become the foundation for stewardship.

This September, Forest School Teacher Institute and TerraLumia Foundation are bringing Forest School to Climate Week NYC, and we’d love for you to join us!

What does learning outside the traditional classroom actually look and feel like?

Episode 2 of Farm School’d, Day in the Life, is now live!

This episode takes us into the everyday experiences of outdoor and nature-based learning: the freedom, responsibility, relationships, challenges, and opportunities that emerge when children are given the space and trust to engage with the world around them.

For those of us in Forest School, many of these moments may look familiar. For others, we hope they offer a new way of seeing what learning can be.

It’s here! Episode 1 of Farm School’d, The Movement, is now live.

Meet the founders, families, educators, and children at the heart of a growing shift toward outdoor and nature-based education, and explore why more families and educators are looking beyond four walls for what learning can be.

We’re especially excited that Episode 1 features Dr. Jean Lomino and the Forest School Teacher Institute, along with Stephanie Lomino and Nature Kin Farm and Forest School , located at Crabtree Farms of Chattanooga. It offers a glimpse into this work in action.

This is more than a look at where learning happens. It’s a conversation about childhood, connection, curiosity, and what becomes possible when children have meaningful opportunities to learn and grow in relationship with the natural world.

🌳 Are you a Forest School leader working with children in the woods?

Our new online 6-month journey, starting May 23rd, explores how to support children to plant forests for the future.

Children’s Forest emerged from Forest School practice, and the desire to give back to the woods that give us so much.

Nurturing a two way relationship with nature is a natural response to the huge benefits we all receive in the forest. As the trees offer us shelter, fire wood, food, clean air, and so much more, we gather the seeds of the trees and plant into Children’s Forests, engaging in relationships of reciprocity. This practice of growing, planting and tending young forests brings a depth of relationship and stewardship to children that they will carry throughout their lives, and into the bright future that we can grow together.

🌿 Our new 6-month online programme will support you to deepen your nature connection practices and contribute to the regeneration of the environment whilst rekindling a culture of care and connection within communities.

You will gain practical tools, creative practices and mentorship to help you grow tree planting projects in your community.

With guidance, resources, and guest speakers including Jon Young (8-shields founder) & Philip Carr-Gomm (former Chief Druid of OBOD - Order Of Bards, Ovates & Druids).

We’re excited to share the official trailer for “Farm School’d!”

This new four-part documentary series, produced by FARMUSE with support from Kubota, explores the growing movement of farm, forest, and outdoor-based education through the stories of children, families, and educators across the country.

We’re honored that Dr. Jean Lomino and the Forest School Teacher Institute are featured in the series, along with Nature Kin Farm & Forest School in Chattanooga. It’s an opportunity to share not only what learning in nature can look like, but why creating more opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive outdoors matters.

Last week, we had the joy of welcoming a team from Nature & Nurture Academy in Delaware to Chattanooga for a two-day Studio Session filled with observation, conversation, reflection, and learning together.

Led by Dr. Jean Lomino, the experience offered participants opportunities to explore Forest School across a variety of settings while engaging in topics including observation and assessment, nature journaling, cultural themes, emergent learning, diversabilities, and site development.

A meaningful part of Studio Sessions is that the learning experience is thoughtfully shaped around each school community, including its vision, priorities, and areas of growth. It is also a chance to see that there is no single way Forest School has to look. Each landscape, group of children, and program brings something unique to the work.

We are incredibly grateful to the schools and organizations that opened their spaces and shared their time, children, practices, and stories with us:

🌱 Lookout Lake Early Learning Program, the Birthplace of Wauhatchie Forest School
🌱 Wauhatchie Forest School at Reflection Riding
🌱 Nature Kin Farm and Forest School at Crabtree Farms of Chattanooga
🌱 Ivy Academy Chattanooga & Ivy's Skillern Elementary

And a huge thank you to the Nature & Nurture Academy team for traveling to Tennessee, asking thoughtful questions, sharing your own experiences, and learning alongside us. We are excited to see what you carry home and how it takes root in your own community. 💚
