Have you ever noticed how your mind seems to be everywhere except where you are right now? Maybe you’re sitting in class, but instead of paying attention, you’re thinking about that awkward conversation you had earlier or stressing about something you said online. Before you know it, you’re feeling anxious or upset, and you’re not able to focus on your work, making you even more nervous. What if you had the power to hit “pause”, take some deep breaths, and find your way back to focusing on the work in front of you? Becoming more aware of the distracting feelings and/or thoughts with an attitude of kindness, curiosity, and self-compassion allows you to return your focus to the present moment with a greater sense of calm and clarity. That’s what mindfulness is all about.
Mindfulness may be cooler than you think. Check out this list of celebrities, athletes, and highly successful entrepreneurs and CEOs who practice mindfulness for stress management, performance, to maintain composure under pressure, to overcome anxiety, and enhance creativity: Actor/Comedian Jim Carrey; Musicians Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, Adele and Lady GaGa; The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton; Entrepreneurs/CEOs Oprah Winfrey, Arianna Huffington and Richard Branson; Actress Emma Watson; Athletes Simone Biles, LeBron James, Russell Wilson, Steph Curry, and Serena Williams among many others.
In this chapter, we’ll explore how mindfulness isn’t just about sitting quietly and meditating - it’s a way of living that helps you connect with yourself and the world around you in a calmer and accepting way. By practicing mindfulness, you’ll get better at understanding and managing your emotions, develop greater self-awareness, improve your focus, and ultimately, lead a happier and more successful life.
