Five flounders featured at 'Flat is Back'
At the end of Boston’s Fish Pier, past dozens of fish companies and the site of what was once called the nation’s largest daily fresh-fish auction, eight of the state’s top chefs gathered to celebrate and showcase a single fish: flounder.
“I love putting flatfish on the menu,” said William Kovel, head chef and owner of Catalyst Restaurant in Cambridge.
Kovel stood at the back of MassPort’s Exchange Building in front of doors that open to Boston Harbor, one sample remaining on a white tablecloth.

On Thursday, October 29 from 5:30–7:30 PM, hear from a panel of experts about nitrogen pollution, innovative solutions, and the work being done to improve the health of Cape Cod’s fish nurseries and waterways.
Guest speakers include Bill Amaru, commercial fisherman; Steve Kirk of The Nature Conservancy ; Brian Baumgaertel of the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Technology Center; and Keith Wilda, alternative fertilizers.

The first is, “The sea will provide.”
“I’m not religious, but there are times where I read the Bible,” Ryder said on a recent summer day; relying on the sea has been his act of faith.

Captain Beau Gribbin calls himself a dinosaur when it comes to technology, but he’s always looking for more environmental sensors on his fishing gear.
“Why not put more of these into the ocean? I ask every scientist I see,” he said earlier this month after returning from a 38-hour scalloping trip. He has a sensor on his dredge and a few on his lobster traps.

On a mid-summer night, more than 400 people filled a big white tent behind the Harwich Community Center, drinking ch*****ne, eating everything from dogfish and scallops to oysters and clams, bidding on excursions and auction items, raising more than $350,000 for the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance.
The evening’s success - and the non-profit’s success - can be traced back to a few fishermen getting together in Captain Fred Bennett’s workshop 35 years ago when their livelihoods and the 400-year-old tradition the Cape was built on was under threat.
