Meet Fatima Lopez! Fatima is a third year student at Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in Liberal Studies Elementary Education. She's passionate about equal opportunities for students. During her free time, Fatima paints her nails, catches up on TV shows, and reorganizes her room!

Meet Kelly Kossi ! Kelly is a junior at George Mason University pursuing Criminology with a minor in Forensic Psychology. She is passionate about becoming independent while giving back to her community that has invested in her. During her free time, Kelly creates choreography for her dance team!

Meet Nadiya Khaydari! Nadiya is a junior pursuing degree in Political Science and Economics at James Madison University. She found her passion in global affairs and helping others reach their full potential. During her free time, Nadiya likes to spend time with her friends and family, learn new skills and be creative!

Meet Brian Kayser! Brian is finishing up his third and final year of Ed.D program in Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education at Curry. He works primarily with the secondary teacher ed program and teaching a section of Teaching as a Profession, which is open to undergrads. His research centers on first-gen equity and access and culturally responsive teaching with an emphasis on integrating social justice. Before coming to Curry, he taught for 10 years in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City Schools. When he’s not on a Zoom call, he’s chasing his three boys around (9 yrs old,7 yrs old,and 10 months), running, or making chocolate chip cookies!

Meet Valeria Cruz! Valeria recently graduated from UVa with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She will be applying to grad schools this fall. She’s passionate about helping others become their best versions of themselves. During her free time, Valeria enjoys going on walks with her dog and take hikes with her family!

We wrapped up our last day of retreat on Friday. Students got last minute resume tips. Students are still working and submitting there resumes and essays for reviews. We finished up our retreat with HBCU panel w/ Shandoures Henderson and Sanora Durden. @ Charlottesville, Virginia

Yesterday, juniors and seniors worked on building and putting their resumes together. Students also learned about SAT and where to look for resources. The day ended with Mary Feamster talking about the importance of mental health. @ Charlottesville, Virginia

Yesterday, juniors joined the retreat to learn about college process. Juniors learned about differences between AP vs DE classes and how they will look on their transcript. Seniors continued working on their essays and Commmon App. Additionally, they learned how to connect with their teachers and professors with Kelly Kossi and Bonnie Gordon. Both groups came together to talk with Dejuanna Gillispie about admission process and UVa. @ Charlottesville, Virginia

Yesterday, seniors got to learn in depth about CommonApp and how to use it with Brian Kayser. Other members helped students with their senior year schedules. Students could still register for this retreat (at https://tinyurl.com/cville1stgen2020retreat)!

Yesterday, we finished up with our first day of the retreat! Brian Kayser introduced to students the basic components of the college application. Fatima Lopez walked students through their college essays. Nadiya Khaydari talked to students about college search and how to find a major.
