CEA fully supports the AEA in their fight for collective bargaining.
The bigger question is why is this such a fight? The majority of ACPS staff asked for CB. It is unconscionable that ACPS refuses to listen & has yet to keep the promises they’ve made to their teachers & staff.

Come join us and be a part of history! We are so excited for this important next step. It's a great time to be an employee of the Charlottesville City Schools
Call to Action
This Thursday, February 2, the Charlottesville City School Board will be considering collective bargaining for city school employees. We need community members, parents and staff to show up!
Granting employees the right to collectively bargain will make CCS one of the strongest school systems in Virginia. This is a groundbreaking step for our city and our state.
Thursday’s meeting is an extremely important step in the process. The Charlottesville Education Association (CEA) proposed a resolution last April and has worked with the school board for 10 months to reach this point.
This will be the first meeting to hear the resolution; a final vote will occur in March.
If approved, this resolution will allow both employees and the school board to bring 2 issues to the bargaining table. After the first contract period, we will have the right to bargain on ANY issue in our contract! This resolution benefits nurses, assistants, nutrition workers, custodians, and teachers.
Now is the time for the school board to hear from you. Key talking points:
We are in a national teacher shortage. Giving teachers a voice in their contract is a sure way to increase retention and attract candidates.
Employee working conditions are students’ learning conditions. By making these improvements, we can positively impact student learning.
This is an opportunity for Board members to put words into action by authorizing collective bargaining. We currently have a supportive school board in Charlottesville and it’s time to codify that support for the future of our schools.
Ways your voice can be heard:
Speak in person during public comment at 5pm at CHS on Thursday 2/2.
Email the school board at [email protected] and Dr. Gurley at [email protected] to express your support for them voting YES at the March meeting.

We are getting great coverage!
From the article:
Jennifer McKeever, a school board member, implored the rest of the board to act as a body to settle on a resolution for the school in the coming weeks.
“I’m hoping we can have a next step coming out of this meeting,” McKeever said.
But later in the meeting, following spirited debates on whether the district should lift its mask mandate for teachers, board member Lashundra Bryson Morsberger noted the need for collective bargaining in making such a decision.
“My biggest concern is that we didn’t hear from anyone that we needed to change it and I didn’t hear from teachers since they would be impacted,” Bryson Morsberger said. “Tonight was a good show of why we need collective bargaining.”
Charlottesville education union petitions School Board for the right to engage in collective bargaining The School Board now has until August to decide if it will allow the new union to operate.
Jennifer McKeever just asked the Board to agree to forming a task force to show CCS employees that they are willing to engage with staff on collective bargaining. She specifically mentioned how impressive it is that 85% of staff are in support. Beth Baptist included a task force being formed in her wrap up. We need to keep up the pressure. Stay tuned for more.
