The Center recognizes the enduring power of literature, storytelling, and the book arts to engage in public dialogue and promote intercultural understanding.

As an affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the Virginia Center for the Book works within a network of more than 50 affiliates to promote books, reading, literacy, and the literary life of Virginia.

About our Book Arts program

Virginia Center for the Book, a program of Virginia Humanities, hosts a community of member artists exploring books, paper, and printmaking through a hands-on studio located in Charlottesville’s Jefferson School. Our book arts program engages in arts & humanities projects with a community-access approach and provides equipment and training resources for individual artists to practice their craft. The goal of our member artists group is to provide the public a direct educational experience with book arts—including printing, binding, and papermaking—amidst largest collection of letterpress type and equipment available for public use in the Commonwealth.

About the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established by public law in 1977 to promote books, reading, literacy, and libraries, as well as the scholarly study of books. Since its founding, the Center has established affiliate centers in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Center’s mission is carried out internationally through its overseas affiliates. More than 80 organizations are Center for the Book reading promotion partners both in the United States and abroad.

Center for the Book programs includes the Books & Beyond author series, in which writers from across the country come to the Library to discuss their work and their use of the Library’s extraordinary resources. The National Book Festival authors program is also a Center for the Book project.

The Center also places special emphasis on young readers through reading and writing contests, the Read.govwebsite and the new Young Readers Center in the Thomas Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill.
