Private piano & horn lesson for adults and children in North Charlottesville | Freelance Musician

I started playing piano in the 2nd grade at 7 years old. During high school I participated in the local, regional and national level competition for the NFSM (National Fraternity of Student Musicians). I received excellent ratings for the local and regional level in 1996 and 1997 and superior rating for the national level in 1998 at 17 years old. I also received superior ratings for 3 years at the Arizona Interscholastic Association competition. I received an award for outstanding piano study and performance for the year in my piano studio growing up out of 25 other students in 1999. I started playing the french horn in 5th grade. I attended Northern Arizona Arts Camp for two years and also the world renowned arts camp, Interlochen Arts Camp twice, located in Interlochen, Michigan. I have also attended Kendall Betts Horn Camp in New Hampshire twice and had the wonderful opportunity to work with many different professional horn players, including Kendall Betts, Barry Tuckwell, David O’hanian, Bill Capps, Michael Hatfield, and many others. I performed in 2 National Honor Bands during high school. The first, John Phillip Sousa National Honors Band which performed in Washington, D.C. in 1999; and the second, the National Wind Ensemble which performed in Carnegie Hall in 2000. I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a strong emphasis in Music Theory and Horn in 2005. I have also played professionally with 2 symphony orchestras, the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra both on Horn. I continue to perform with the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra now. I have also played in many different cities across the country for various music ensembles on the horn. I began teaching in 1999 on both horn and piano. I have been activily teaching horn and piano in a studio setting with a minium of 20 students in my studio in the Louisa area since 2007. I have taught both young children and adults, with varying abilities, for over ten years. I have recently relocated my studio to Charlottesville and am teaching in the area. I am currently a member of the Music Teachers Association under the Charlottesville Music Teacher Association chapter.

Since August 17, 1922, the Charlottesville Band has filled the air near and far with symphonic music. Formerly known as The Municipal Band of Charlottesville, we are one of the oldest continuously operating volunteer community bands in the United States, bringing talented community members together....

Last week I had the honor of performing a featured French horn solo at the Paramount Theater with the Charlottesville Band.

And yes — I was nervous.

I stood in the wings before my entrance and felt every single thing I tell my students they’re going to feel. The racing heart. The second-guessing. The voice that says what if I mess up.

And then the music started. And I played anyway.
This is what I want every student in my studio to know — the nerves don’t go away. Not after years of lessons. Not after dozens of performances. Not even after 28 years of teaching and playing.

But you show up. You take a breath. And you play.
That’s not just a performance lesson. That’s a life lesson.
Every recital I ask my students to be brave. Last Monday night, I got to be brave too. 📯🎹

Feeling grateful after a full and meaningful week in Arizona. I loved collaborating with the incredible Dian Baker‑Sellheim and appreciated the support of Dr. John Ericson at ASU in making this trip and performance possible.

I also got precious time with my parents — and the chance to play for them, which was truly special.
