The FACE Project is a unique Character Education program :

A research-based and comprehensive curriculum, integrated within the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). A teacher-friendly curriculum that is developed by educators for educators. A curriculum that offers 38 weekly lesson plans per grade, preschool through 5th grade that focus on learning tolerance, empathy and celebrating differences. Teachers participate in an initial all-day, in-service training with follow-up consultations to institute a program in their classroom that is designed around a comprehensive Character Education curriculum, featuring weekly, individualized lesson plans for preschool through fifth grades. Funded by generous grants from the Annenberg Foundation, the Better Living Foundation, the Build-a-Bear Bear Hugs Foundation, the Darrin-McHone Charitable Foundation, and the Walmart Foundation, the FACE Project has already reached over 10,000 students in 8 counties in Virginia.

Around the holidays, I often wonder what I can do to foster altruism in my kids. It’s the season of giving, but it feels like the season of obsessing over what’s going to be received. Can I help my kids become a little less self-absorbed and a little more generous toward others—especially those who might not have as much as we do? In one practice, children observe their “belly buddy,” a stuffed animal placed on their stomachs, as it rises and falls with their breath. Belly breathing has been adapted by the children’s program “Sesame Street,” which consulted with the University of Wisconsin team and made kindness the theme of its latest season.

is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. Millions of people have come together to support and champion the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live. We have two days for getting deals – Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On , we have a day for giving back. Every act of generosity counts, and each means even more when we give together.

This year, will be held on November 28, 2017. We hope that you will consider donating to the FACE Project this Giving Tuesday, enabling us to provide quality character education programs to children throughout Central Virginia.

About FACE

The FACE Project (Functional Approach to Character Education) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to use character education to promote positive social and emotional development of students in preschool through 5th grade, increase socially responsible positive behaviors, reduce antisocial behaviors and foster a healthy school environment. It's a small organization with a big impact here in Central Virginia. Since its inception in 2002, the FACE Project has provided its program to more than 10,000 students in twelve school divisions. 60% of the nearly 5,500 students in the current program are financially disadvantaged (e.g. they are eligible for free lunch and/or breakfast).

We believe that character education matters.

We know that schools that implement character education programs report less bullying, happier students, and a more welcome learning environment. We know that children who receive character education lessons have higher self-esteem, treat others in a kinder manner, and achieve more academically.

The FACE Project’s school-based Character Education program for students in preschool through 5th Grade provides a curricula package for teachers and counselors of roughly 30 weekly lessons per grade that is designed to promote tolerance, empathy, respect and celebrating differences. The FACE Project developed the curricula package in close collaboration with teachers and counselors to improve classroom management and facilitate achievement of school-wide social and emotional development goals and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). The FACE project promotes a multi-stakeholder approach engaging teachers, school principals, counselors and administrators; parents and community members; and students in both the strategic planning, project implementation and evaluation process. The FACE Project provides in-service training to teachers and counselors in addition to follow-up consultations and classroom observations to build capacity and promote best practices.

How Can You Help?

The FACE Project seeks your support to provide books and character education lessons to double the schools implementing the program next year. Your contributions help students realize their tremendous potential as the youngest members of our community.

A gift of $1000 will support implementation of FACE in ten classrooms.
A gift of $500 will provide a complete set of curriculum guides for seven grade levels (PreK-5).
A gift of $250 will provide a complete set of supplemental children's books for a school.
A gift of $100 will support professional coaching on character education lessons for teachers.
A gift of $50 will support regular visits to partner schools for evaluation and mentoring.
A gift of $25 will provide character puppets to engage students during lessons.
