The Clark Scholars at UVA Engineering hosted a community fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association on April 10 at Carter Mountain Orchard, raising funds and awareness for those affected by Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

Subarna is originally from Nepal and is majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Inspired by inventors who changed the world, he chose engineering as a path to make a meaningful impact on society. He appreciated how the Clark Scholars Program helped him become familiar with campus, academic workload, and build a supportive community before starting college; Carter’s Mountain was his favorite activity. Subarna is a member of the Photography and Cinematography Club and plans to join Rocketry and Hoos Flying, and he also participates in Table Tennis Club and SASE. In his free time, he enjoys photography, gaming, working out, and playing table tennis.

Sheree is from Virginia and is majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She chose biomedical engineering because she enjoys solving problems and wants to connect engineering with healthcare as she pursues a future career in medicine. Her favorite Clark Scholars memory was visiting Carter’s Mountain. Sheree is involved in Orthodox Christian Campus Ministries, W.O.C.H.A., the Society of Women Engineers, the Pre-Dental Society, volunteers with Meals on Wheels, and works in Professor Christ’s lab. In her free time, she enjoys playing pickleball and taking road trips to explore new places. She is also a Certified Nurse Assistant.

Shehroz is from New Jersey and is majoring in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He believes engineering is his calling to bring innovation to life. His favorite part of the Clark Scholars experience has been learning from his mentors and supervisors. Shehroz is involved in MOCHA, Mars, the Astronomy Club, and AIAA, and is interested in aerospace research and internships. In his free time, he enjoys volleyball, going to the gym, studying, music, stargazing, late-night drives, and spending time with people he cares about. A fun fact about him is that he has never lost a game of Connect 4.

Sayonee is from Texas and is majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She chose biomedical engineering because it combines healthcare with technical design, allowing her to pursue medicine while building a strong engineering foundation. She hopes to advance healthcare and make a meaningful societal impact. Her favorite part of the Clark Scholars Program was spending late nights in the lounge with her cohort — watching shows, playing games, grabbing snacks, and bonding together. Sayonee is involved in the Asian Student Union, Indian Student Association, the Engineering Student Council First-Year Committee, and Woos First, and plans to rush in the spring and join the Clark Scholars Living Community. In her free time, she enjoys working out, watching movies, playing pickleball, shopping, and spending time with friends. A fun fact about her is that she graduated in a class of just 37 students.

Sadat is from Virginia and is majoring in Computer Engineering. He chose engineering because of his strong interest in technology and his desire to explore both hardware and software systems. His favorite part of the Clark Scholars Program is the strong connections formed across cohorts and with faculty. Sadat is involved in Clark RoboSub (Electrical Team), Mars (Electrical Team), Amateur Radio Club, SASE, Machine Learning Club, and SWAT. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends, watching movies, and learning ways to improve productivity and digital skills. A fun fact about him is that he once had a pet chicken in Bangladesh.

Rodolfo is from Virginia and is majoring in Biomedical Engineering. He chose biomedical engineering because he is inspired by innovative technologies such as 3D bioprinting and medical devices that solve complex healthcare challenges. He hopes to improve lives through his work. He enjoyed exploring Charlottesville and discovering new food spots during the Clark Scholars Program. Rodolfo is a member of SHPE and plans to join the cycling club. In his free time, he enjoys cycling, weightlifting, and rock climbing.

Jonathan is from Venezuela and is majoring in Chemical Engineering. His passion for math and science led him to engineering, where he can continue exploring curiosity-driven questions about the world around him. His favorite part of the Clark Scholars experience has been connecting with new friends and faculty. Jonathan works in a research lab synthesizing and characterizing bioactive polymer–peptide and polymer–protein conjugates. In his free time, he enjoys hanging out with friends and playing video games.

Janice is from Virginia and is majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She was fascinated by the wide range of work engineers do — from designing complex machinery to developing cosmetics — and was excited by the breadth of the field. One of her favorite summer memories was visiting Kings Dominion. Janice is involved in RoboSub, CSA, and ASU. In her free time, she enjoys eating out, shopping, dancing, crafting, baking, and sleeping. A fun fact about her is that she has had blonde, pink, light brown, and dark brown hair.

She was drawn to engineering because it blends service with endless curiosity — offering opportunities to discover and create meaningful solutions. Her favorite part of the Clark Scholars Program has been the diversity of experiences shared between cohorts and the openness of peers to teach and learn from one another. Hamdi is involved in NSBE, SWE, HOSA, the Somalia Student Association, and the Muslim Student Association. In her free time, she enjoys reading, learning new languages, and organizing events that celebrate diversity and culture.
