The Covenant School is a non-denominational Christian day school offering education in Pre-K through Grade 12. The Lower School (Pre-K through Grade 5) is conveniently located in a historic brick building near downtown Charlottesville, Virginia. The Upper School is situated on a 23-acre campus in Albemarle County, just south of Charlottesville. There, the middle school (Grades 6 through 8) and the high school (Grades 9 through 12) enjoy a 96,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility built in 2002, with a performing arts center, gymnasium, and several athletic fields. Founded in 1985 with 45 students, Covenant’s enrollment has grown over the past 35 years to an enrollment of more than 550 students. The Covenant School provides formal education in the traditional academic disciplines of English and language arts, history and geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, and fine arts and offers a broad and varied program of physical education and sports. A rigorous college preparatory curriculum taught within a Christian world-view creates an environment that is both supportive and challenging, seeking to inspire students to love God and to love learning. From the phonics foundation laid in Pre-K to the Honors and Advanced Placement courses in high school, Covenant students are encouraged to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. A glimpse into Chapel at Birdwood!

Yesterday, our Lower School students learned about the Fruit of the Spirit and what it looks like to grow in these qualities each day. Chapel at Birdwood is a time to worship together, every Wednesday through song, Scripture, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Doxology, with lessons and plenty of opportunities for student participation.
Each week, students are recognized for “Being Third,” living out the motto of the Lower School: God first, others second, self third.

A closer look at the natural world in Upper School Visual Arts!

Students are using microscopes and other tools to explore plants and flowers from different perspectives, capturing intricate botanical details through observation and drawing. These studies will come together in a multimedia composition, combining pencil, pen, paper, collage, and more, with a full flower drawing at the center.

College visits are underway at Covenant! Our students have been meeting with college representatives, asking questions, and learning more about the opportunities available to them beyond Covenant.

We’ve already welcomed representatives from Furman University, High Point University, Randolph College, Randolph-Macon College, the University of Mary Washington, UVA, and Wake Forest, with more visits coming up soon from Bridgewater College, Davidson College, Denison University, Dickinson College, Mercer University, and Villanova University.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, our community came together in remembrance.

Our YAF Club continued its annual tradition of placing flags in the shape of the Twin Towers, while our choirs led us in the National Anthem followed by a prayer for our country.

May we never forget, and may we continue to pray for our nation. 🇺🇸

Season 2 of Wingin’ It kicks off with Head of Middle School/ Head of Hickory Spencer Burton. After 27 years at Covenant, Spencer reflects on what first brought him to the school, why middle schoolers became “his people,” and how being known and taken seriously by his own teachers shaped his approach to education. Along the way, he shares plenty of Covenant memories, from Rockbridge and New York trips to Hannah Montana, Washington Commanders football, and a little wholesome chaos.

Taking advantage of the beautiful weather, students brought their learning outside for their first Socratic seminar on Erasmus and Machiavelli.

Western Civ. II students came prepared with primary source documents, discussing the advice each author offered Renaissance leaders on how to lead a country well. Students also observed their peers and provided feedback, giving them an opportunity to strengthen their skills in discussion, debate, and thoughtful engagement.
