University of Virginia Tibet Center The UVA Tibet Center was founded in 2008. ཝིར་ཇི་ནིས་ཡ་གཙུག་ལག་སློབ་ཆེན་བོད་ཀྱི་ལྟེ་གནས་ནི་༢༠༠༨ ལོར་གསར་འཛུགས་བྱས་པ་ཞིག་ཡིན།

The Tibet Center brings together University faculty, students, staff, and alumni from a wide variety of disciplines and offers Tibet-related courses, cultural programs, speaker series, and community engagement. The Center also reaches beyond the University to connect scholars of Tibetan Studies around the world, advance collaborative research, relate the academy to people from across social sectors, and foster programs of direct benefit to modern-day Tibetans in specific local communities.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program (Summer 2026). One of the highlights of the program was a collaborative group project in which our NC Fellows had the opportunity to develop a business idea from the ground up.

Working together, the fellows went through the different stages of developing a business—from identifying an idea and understanding a potential market to developing the concept, considering customers and competition, planning operations, and thinking through the financial aspects of the business.

The project gave our fellows an opportunity to put many of the skills they had learned throughout the program into practice while strengthening their teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking.

It was exciting to see the fellows take an idea from its early stages and work together to turn it into a thoughtful business concept. We are proud of their creativity, collaboration, and hard work throughout the process!

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program (Summer 2026). Another memorable experience for our NC Fellows was a hands-on ring-making workshop, where they had the opportunity to explore the craft of jewelry making. 💍

During the workshop, our fellows learned about the tools, techniques, and processes involved in creating a ring. They had the opportunity to work with the materials themselves and gain a deeper appreciation for the skill, creativity, and attention to detail involved in jewelry design and craftsmanship.

For fellows with an interest in jewelry and creative entrepreneurship, the workshop offered a particularly valuable opportunity to observe the craft from a hands-on perspective and learn more about the process of turning an idea into a finished piece. This was such a memorable and inspiring experience for our fellows! 💍✨

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program (summer 2026). Our NC Fellows had the opportunity to take part in an engaging, hands-on workshop focused on coffee roasting, cupping, and barista training. ☕️

During the workshop, our fellows learned about the coffee roasting process, explored how roasting affects flavor and aroma, and participated in coffee cupping to develop their understanding of different coffee profiles. They also gained practical barista skills and had the opportunity to put their learning into practice.

The workshop provided a unique opportunity to explore the craft and business of coffee while learning skills that can be valuable in entrepreneurship and the growing specialty coffee industry.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program (Summer 2026). Our NC Fellows had the opportunity to hear from guest speaker Michael Carter Jr., author of Africulture.

Michael shared his experiences, insights, and reflections on finding purpose, following your passion, and turning ideas into meaningful work. His conversation with our fellows encouraged them to think more deeply about their own goals, cultural identity, creativity, and the ways they can use their talents to make a positive impact in their communities.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program (Summer 2026). Our NC Fellows participated in a hands-on session focused on finance management and bookkeeping, gaining practical skills that are essential for starting and managing a successful business.

Through the session, our fellows explored the basics of financial management, bookkeeping, tracking income and expenses, and understanding the financial health of a business. The practical exercises gave them an opportunity to apply these concepts and better understand how sound financial practices support effective decision-making and long-term business success.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program (Summer 2026). Our NC Fellows had the opportunity to spend an evening learning the art of making sourdough bread through a hands-on baking experience.

From preparing and mixing the dough to shaping and working with the starter, our fellows got to practice each step of the process themselves. The evening offered a wonderful opportunity to learn not only the techniques behind sourdough baking, but also the patience, care, and attention to detail that go into making a good loaf of bread.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program. Our NC Fellows had an enriching and inspiring day at the University of Virginia. The day began with an engaging workshop led by Dr. Lillard and her Ph.D. students Emily Daggett, where our fellows explored the principles and practices of Montessori education. Through interactive discussions and hands-on learning, they gained valuable insights into child-centered teaching methods and the impact of Montessori philosophy on early childhood development.

The fellows also enjoyed lunch together with Dr. Lillard and her team, providing a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss educational practices, and strengthen professional connections.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Early Education Lab, where they observed innovative teaching approaches, learned about current research in early childhood education, and experienced practical demonstrations of effective instructional methods.

To conclude the visit, Dr. Lillard graciously signed copies of her book (Montessori : The Science Behind the Genius) for our fellows, creating a memorable keepsake from an inspiring day of learning and collaboration.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program. Our NC Fellows had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn about the art, craftsmanship, and business of T-shirt printing. A heartfelt thank you to Don and Jesse from for going above and beyond to make this experience so meaningful.
They took the time to walk us through every step of the processfrom creating the design and preparing the screens to mixing inks, printing, and finishing each shirt. They also shared the story of how their business has grown over the years, giving our fellows valuable insight into the dedication, hard work, and entrepreneurship behind a successful local business.

🇺🇸 UVA NC Fellows Program – FY23 U.S.-Based In-Person Program. Our UVA NC Fellows had the opportunity to visit Monticello, the historic home of Thomas Jefferson, founder of the University of Virginia. The visit offered fellows a unique opportunity to learn more about Thomas Jefferson's vision for education, leadership, and public service while exploring one of the most iconic historic sites in the United States.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Brandon Dillard from for sharing the history and legacy of one of America's Founding Fathers, providing our fellows with valuable insights into Jefferson's life, family, and lasting impact.
