The University was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, who established the curriculum and designed the buildings.

The Department of Mathematics at UVa is housed in Kerchof Hall on the central grounds of the University. We have 28 tenured and tenure-track faculty, ~12 postdoctoral instructors, several lecturers, a variety of visitors, 50 graduate students, and over 250 undergraduate majors. Courses are taught in a variety of mathematical areas, and research is done in many diverse fields.
