Around here, a praying mantis can stop the whole day.

We call them Eureka Moments, those unexpected nature finds that make us pause whatever we’re doing, gather around, look closely, and wonder.

And today? Nature was showing off a little.

A praying mantis.
Three bald eagles.
A red-tailed hawk.
Skinks.
A rat snake.
And a spider on the hunt. 🕷️

None of those were on the lesson plan. But when you spend your days outside, you learn pretty quickly that some of the best discoveries are the things you weren’t looking for.

So we stop. We notice. We observe. We ask questions. We make guesses. We watch what happens next. And then, eventually, we go back to whatever we were doing before a praying mantis interrupted the day.

Learning outside isn’t just knowing more about the natural world, it’s becoming the kind of person who notices it. 💚

The school day ends. The adventure doesn’t.

After School at GAP is intentionally a little different from the rest of the day. There’s more room to exhale. To play the game that takes forever. To build something just because you have an idea. To play with friends. To make art, get muddy, invent elaborate worlds, or simply find a cozy spot and decompress after a full day.

After spending the day learning, collaborating, problem-solving, and navigating all the things that come with being a kid at school, sometimes what kiddos need most is time that doesn’t demand so much of them. Good friends. Fresh air. Interesting things to do. Trusted adults. And plenty of space to decide what happens next.

That’s After School at GAP. 💚

This week, we’re putting the finishing touches on our all-school collaborative art project, a tradition we love starting the year with. Yes, we’re practicing a new art technique. And, we’re creating something beautiful. But the bigger purpose is what’s happening in this photo: members of our community gathered around a table, adding their own small piece to something none of us could create alone.

At the beginning of a new school year, before we’ve quite figured out who this particular community will become, there’s something pretty special about creating art together. Different ages. Different ideas. Different hands. One shared creation. A little like building a school community. 💚

Who are we, and who do we want to be? 💚

The Silver Sea Lions spent time thinking about exactly that, working together to create a flock statement that captures the kind of community they want to build this year. Their words. Their ideas. Their commitments to one another. When kiddos have a voice in creating their community, they have a whole lot more ownership in helping it become real. 🩶🦭

Sometimes you plan the lesson. Sometimes the lesson arrives in a bag of ice. With another day of serious heat and humidity, each flock got a bag of ice today. The goal was simple: help everyone stay cool.

What happened next was very GAP.

🧡 The Orange Monarchs turned theirs into a full sensory exploration: touching, playing, noticing, experimenting, and experiencing all the wonderfully cold possibilities.

🩶 The Silver Sea Lions knew exactly what to do: use that ice to COOL DOWN. Sometimes the most important learning on a hot day is listening to your body and giving it what it needs.

💚 The Emerald Eddys looked at their bag and apparently thought, SCIENCE. They tracked how quickly the ice melted, made observations, collected data...and yes, also used it to cool themselves down along the way.

Same hot day. Same bags of ice. Three completely different experiences.

We love the way learning unfolds at GAP, responsive to the kids, the environment, the questions that pop up, and yes, sometimes even the weather. Because when it's this hot, you can complain about the melting ice...or you can collect data on it.

(Okay, you can also complain a little. It's really hot. 😂)

Silver Science 🌿

This week, science started with a question: What can we do with all of this autumn olive?

So the Silver flock made a plan. They’ve been learning about autumn olive, identifying it around school, and harvesting the berries. Today they started to turn their collection into jam. And tucked inside that seemingly simple project is so much learning.

🌿 Plant identification
🌿 Native vs. invasive species
🌿 Ecosystems and human impact
🌿 Seasonal change
🌿 Food systems
🌿 Measurement, observation, and following a process

This is one of the things we love most at GAP. The natural world isn’t something we only read about in a textbook. We can look around our classroom, touch it, investigate it, ask questions about it, and sometimes even turn it into jam.

Why do we make so much room for Exploration? Because kids need time that isn’t entirely directed by adults.

During Exploration, a learner might choose to head to the creek to see what they can discover. They might join a group heading out on a quest. They might settle in around the fire to make something. Or they might choose completely unstructured play in the Play Space.

Those choices may look very different, but there’s a whole lot happening inside each one.

Kids are figuring out: What am I interested in? What do I want to do with this time? Who do I want to do it with? What happens when my plan doesn’t work? How do I join a group? How do I navigate a disagreement? What can I create when nobody tells me what to make?

Exploration gives kids practice making decisions, managing their own time, following curiosity, navigating friendships, taking appropriate risks, solving problems, and (perhaps most importantly) learning what to do when no one is telling them exactly what to do next.

We live in a world where kids’ time can be incredibly scheduled and adult-directed. So at GAP, we intentionally leave some space. Space to wander. Space to make. Space to play. Space to discover what happens next.

Today, that looked like creeks, whittling, building fairy houses, and plenty of good old-fashioned play.

And we think all of it matters. 💚

A knife is a tool. And learning to use one is a responsibility.

Today was our first round of whittling check-offs! Before learners can whittle independently, they go through safety training, learn and practice the necessary skills, and then demonstrate that they can use the tool safely and responsibly. Only then do they earn their check-off.

It would certainly be easier to just say knives are dangerous, so kids shouldn’t use them. But we believe there’s something powerful about teaching kids how to navigate appropriate risk instead of removing every risk from their path.

They learn to slow down. Pay attention to their surroundings. Follow safety procedures. Care for their tools. Recognize when something doesn’t feel safe. And understand that increased independence comes with increased responsibility.

And when an educator finally says, “You’re checked off!” That pride is pretty great to watch.

The goal isn’t really just learning how to whittle. It’s learning “I can be trusted with real things, and I know how to handle that responsibility.”
