From Ecco Italy to Speak! 🌍

VoyageVirginia recently sat down with our founder, Christina Ball, to talk about the rather winding road that led from making handmade artist books in Cortona, Italy, to launching Ecco Italy in an upstairs café in Charlottesville, to the Speak! Language Center of today.

Twenty-two years later, we’re incredibly grateful for all the teachers, students, partners, friends, lucky breaks, and unexpected opportunities that have shaped our story along the way.

You can’t learn this on an app! 🇮🇹

Before leading a Cavalier Travels trip to Italy through UVA Engagement, Ann Lawrence Grasty—Director for University Annual Giving at Honor the Future—wanted more than vocabulary. She wanted guidance with pronunciation, practical cultural knowledge, and the confidence to connect with people while traveling.

Through Speak!’s Buon Viaggio: Italian for Travelers course, Ann Lawrence learned how to order coffee at an Italian bar, why sitting at a table might cost more than standing at the counter, and other details that made her feel more prepared for the experience.

“The things I learned from my instructor simply couldn’t be learned through an app.”

And the payoff? At least once in Italy, someone thought she spoke Italian! 👏

As Ann Lawrence says, learning a language doesn’t just help you communicate—it brings so much more joy to anticipating the journey.

From zero German to full conversations in just one summer. 🇩🇪✨

When Annika decided to spend a year of high school in Germany, she knew she wanted to arrive ready to connect, not just get by. She spent three months working intensively with our native German teacher Helga, building her skills from the ground up.

By the end of the summer, the two were having entire conversations in German. But Annika says the biggest change wasn’t just what she could say. It was having the confidence to say it.

Now she’s off to Germany for the adventure of a lifetime, ready to make mistakes, keep speaking, meet new people, and experience a new culture from the inside. 💙

Gute Reise, Annika! We can’t wait to hear what comes next. 🇩🇪

Language-learning apps, hacks, and trends come and go.

At Speak!, we’ve always believed in something a little more tried and true: human connection.

A real teacher who listens, adapts, answers the unexpected question, catches the nuance, and helps you build the confidence to actually speak.

Technology can be a great tool. But language has always been about people connecting with people.

And that’s still kinda chic. ✨

🥾 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: JEFF 🇪🇸

Jeff didn’t exactly fall in love with Spanish at first—after two years in school, he liked it so little that he switched to Norwegian in college. 😄

Decades later, hiking changed everything. After walking a Camino route in 2024, he realized how essential Spanish would be in the remote villages he loves to explore. That experience led him to Speak! instructor Franco, with whom he focused on practical, real-world travel communication.

Now back in Spain on another Camino, Jeff is putting his Spanish to use every day on the trail. 🇪🇸🥾

> “It is very liberating to think about potential communication phrases I would use in Spain and realize that I can come up with them in my head!”

And there’s a fun full-circle moment: in eighth grade, his Spanish teacher refused to let him choose “Jefe” as his Spanish name… but Franco has been a bit more accommodating. 😂

Naples, pizza, and a room full of curious minds 🇮🇹🍕

Our first Speak! Salon at Vault Virginia kicked off today with a lunchtime journey into Naples and the story of pizza—from its humble beginnings to its place on the world stage ✨

So grateful to Annamaria for co-leading this with me, and to Chef Mike (Michele) at The Bradbury for sharing his authentic Pizza Marinata and Margherita with guests (which made the history deliciously real) 👨‍🍳🔥

We loved the thoughtful questions, the lively dialogue, and the shared curiosity in the room 💛

This is what Speak! is all about:
language, culture, and connection… shared together. And coworkers got to learn something during their lunch break!
