Nearly 30% of school-age kids in our region are African American, but less than 10% of their teachers are. This gap affects how all students view themselves and their futures. AATF works to close this gap, one educator at a time.

Every year, a new group of African American Teaching Fellows earns their teaching licenses and enters the Virginia school system. They aren't just teaching; they are closing racial gaps, showcasing excellence, and inspiring all students toward a brighter, more collaborative future.

Your support helps pay for fellowships, licensure, and professional growth for the next generation of educators who will make a difference. Invest in our teachers. Invest in our students.

Getting talented teachers into the classroom is just the first step. Keeping them there is where the real challenge lies. After nearly 20 years of helping future teachers start their journeys, we're changing that. We’re moving our focus to retaining and supporting the teachers who are currently in our classrooms.

Our new AATF Affiliate Model provides in-service educators with the long-term support they need. We offer:

- Monthly collaborative learning and leadership training
- Professional development points for license renewal
- A stipend that recognizes their commitment
- A close-knit community of fellow educators who support one another.

Summer might be almost over, but we have to admit we missed our students and all the growth we've seen in them.

What was your favorite childhood book?

One of the more powerful tools in our toolkits is to let go and let people be who they are.

✅ Let the students learn in the best way
✅ Let your teaching colleges teach the way they want
✅ Let the administration be who they are

This is one of the lessons our AATF community learned from Leslie Rob at our Summer Institute.

The one thing that sets us apart from other teaching programs is our mentorship program. Our past fellows and teachers guide our current teaching fellows through both good and tough times.

We go beyond simply providing aid. Each year, we offer our Fellows financial support for tuition, books, and licensure fees.

Your donation helps us eliminate financial obstacles for our talented Fellows. This ensures they are prepared to lead and stay in Virginia.

Donate today at aatf.org/donate to support a brighter, more equitable future.

A new vision of what a classroom looks like is a community of diverse students and teachers. We believe that when students receive a diverse education, the whole educational system improves and changes for the better.

Our promise to you is that we will exceed expectations, strive for greater heights, and pass our values on to the next generation.
