Congratulations to Moira Smith, MD '19, Res '22, Fel '24, MPH '12, recipient of the 2026 Outstanding Alumni Award from the UVA Department of Public Health Sciences. The award recognizes an alum of the MPH or MS-CR program who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to public health in their careers.

Dr. Smith is an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia. She is the medical information officer for emergency medicine and director of digital clinical workflows. Her work includes the design, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based clinical pathways integrated within the EHR. Her research is supported by institutional and foundation funding and focuses on digital health innovation and the application of artificial intelligence to improve patient care and clinical efficiency in emergency medicine.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in Richmond over the weekend! We had a great time hosting UVA medical alumni and cheering the Richmond Flying Squirrels on to victory.

Special recognition goes to Tony Fierro, MD '73, for being decked out in his 1819 Society Medallion, a gift he received from the MAA to celebrate his 50th reunion from medical school. 🧡💙

Congratulations to recent graduate Nidhi Purohit, MD '26, recipient of our 2026 Outstanding Student Award. This award is given annually to a member of the graduating class who has made unique and meaningful contributions to the University of Virginia School of Medicine and to the UVA Medical Alumni Association. Executive Director Barry Collins presented the award during Sunday's Hooding Ceremony on behalf of the MAA's Board of Directors and the Medical School Foundation's Board of Trustees.

Dr. Purohit was recognized for playing an essential role in keeping the Class of 2026 connected and serving as a liaison between the class and the MAA. As a student, she consistently offered thoughtful feedback on behalf of her classmates and was a tireless champion who encouraged student involvement.
