Meet Mauro, our B-Speak! English Coaching Student from Colombia

Since partnering with Cornell-Johnson earlier this year, we’ve met so many dynamic international students. Take Mauro Ovalle, for example, a brilliant investment banker from Bogotá, Colombia who’ll be beginning his MBA course at Cornell this fall and hopes to pivot his career into a more global role. Mauro believes that practicing his English is a wise use of his time and he’s been such a pleasure to coach on advanced English communication and interview prep skills.

Language is evolving all the time, particularly idioms and slang. Oxford’s pick for 2023 evolves out of YouTubers using the word as slang for “charisma” or power of attraction. Past words-of-the-year include: vax (2021), toxic (2018), selfie (2013) and locavore (2007). When watching American media, you may wonder why you hear present continuous and present simple sometimes used interchangeably. You're not misunderstanding- this is a thing we do! There are proper ways to use these tenses, though, and we still use them appropriately in most occasions. If you need a review on when to use present simple and present continuous- check out these tips!
