What are your school’s doors telling you about its security preparedness?

We’re proud to share a new white paper from the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS): What Your Doors Are Telling You About Your Security Preparedness.

A secure door is about much more than the lock. The entire opening must work together—door, frame, hardware, glazing, access control, inspection, maintenance, policies, and the people who use it every day.

One line from the paper says it especially well:

“Doors do not create preparedness. They reveal it.”

DOIT President Laura Frye Weaver was honored to contribute her doors, hardware, and codes expertise to this collaborative effort with PASS.

We hope school leaders, facility teams, security professionals, code officials, first responders, and others responsible for school safety will take a few minutes to read and share this important resource.

We’re at Duke University Hospital! 🚪🔥

Laura and Rodney are spending time with members of Duke’s Engineering & Operations team this week, delivering DOIT’s Qualified Fire Door Technician (QFDT) Training.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of returning to Architectural Products of Virginia (APV) for another day of training!

Rodney Weaver led members of APV’s Project Engineering team through Key Meeting Fundamentals, building on the foundation we began with their team during Opening Industry Bootcamp in August.

One of the things we appreciate most about working with APV is their commitment to developing their people. Travis Klein shared after the class that their experience with DOIT training has shown them the value of incorporating it into both new-hire onboarding and their Project Engineer development plan.

That means a lot to us.

Training isn’t just about completing a class. It’s about giving people a strong foundation, helping them understand why we do what we do, and then continuing to build on that knowledge as their careers grow.

Thank you, APV, for trusting DOIT to be part of the development of your Fantastic People. And a big thank-you to Rodney for another great day in the classroom!

Ben has been part of the DOIT journey from the beginning, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything he brings to it.

This week, we wrapped up another Advanced Locksmith Training with the team at Security Lock & Key!

These students have been building their skills through classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and real-world experience—and this week was about taking those skills to the next level.

Advanced training means getting your hands on the hardware, working through challenges, troubleshooting, and building the confidence to understand not just how something works, but why.

A big thank you to Security Lock & Key for continuing to invest in their people and for trusting DOIT to be part of their professional development.

We also want to thank LAB Security Systems for their continued support of our locksmith training. Their pinning kits and products help us give students the hands-on experience that is such an important part of learning this trade. 🔑

And most importantly—congratulations to this group for putting in the work! 👏

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 “𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫.”

One opening can involve a whole lot more than meets the eye.

Doors. Frames. Hardware. Automatic operators. Electrical components. Access control. Life safety. Accessibility. And the needs of the facility and the people using it.

Every piece has its own job to do — but the real challenge is making sure 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠
