Duke just announced that it will drop the SAT essay and ACT essay requirements for students applying for admission next year. The essays will be optional but RECOMMENDED. Duke follows Princeton, Brown, Stanford and California Institute of Technology in dropping the essay requirements.

It is important to note two things:
1. People often confuse the essays with the SAT Writing and ACT English sections, which are still required. Punctuation and grammar skills are tested. ACT English is 25% of your score. SAT Writing is half of your verbal score. So, there’s no escaping misplaced modifiers, comma rules, and subject-verb agreement.

2. Even if the essays are not required, they may be recommended. A strong essay score will boost your chance of admission, even when the essay is not required or recommended.
