Hannah, a student at Eastway Middle School, shares a special connection with her CIS Student Support Specialist, Mrs. Sherese Rodriguez. From meeting essential needs and closing learning gaps to helping students discover new hobbies, explore their passions and supporting their families, Ms. Rodriguez takes whole-child support to heart.

Middle school is a time of growth, discovery and change. Having a caring adult who listens, encourages and believes in you can make all the difference.

Our 1CIS gatherings are an opportunity to align on organizational priorities, share updates, celebrate wins, and recognize the people who make our mission possible.

This month, we stood alongside those impacted by cancer in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honored Indigenous Peoples’ Day as CIS Student Support Specialist Sherese Rodriguez shared her personal testimony, history, and knowledge.

We know our organization is only as strong as the relationships we build with one another. We are honored to come together to learn, celebrate, support one another, and strengthen the bonds that unite us in our mission to surround students with a community of support.

October 8 is , a community-wide initiative encouraging people with Donor Advised Funds to put those charitable dollars to work locally.

At Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, our Student Support Specialists are embedded in schools, building trusted relationships and surrounding students with the support they need to overcome barriers and thrive, from the first day of school through graduation and beyond. Donor Advised Funds helps make that support possible, giving our staff the resources to meet students where they are and help them succeed at school and in life.

Big shoutout to our very own Student Support Specialist, Vanessa Ortega, for taking the stage at the CISNC Fall Regional Session! Vanessa led a leadership session for CIS staff from across North Carolina, sharing her perspective, bringing the energy, and reminding us what it looks like to lead with purpose.

We love seeing our people step into their expertise, pour into others, and represent CIS-Charlotte and strengthen the CIS community.

As we close out Attendance Awareness Month, we’re reflecting on a simple but powerful message: Being Present Matters.

Being present isn’t just something we help our students achieve; it’s something that applies to all of us. For the adults who show up each day, being present means building relationships, staying engaged, listening, supporting one another, and creating a community where students know they matter.

We asked our CIS-Charlotte staff what Being Present Matters means to them and their work. Their responses reflect the intention, consistency, commitment, and care they bring to students and schools every day.

Showing up is more than being there. It’s how we make a difference!

Today at West Mecklenburg High School, Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Road to Hire came together with students, leaders and community partners to celebrate a new partnership focused on helping young adults take their next steps after graduation.

Our organizations already support many of the same students and communities at different stages of their journey. This partnership creates a more connected path forward across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools we both serve.

As one West Mecklenburg High School student who has participated in both programs shared:

“Coming to high school, I did not know what I wanted to do with my life; joining these programs has helped shape me in the best way possible. When I joined CIS/Trio during my sophomore year, I realized it was a place where people actually care, want the best for you and help you accomplish more in life. One of the experiences that stuck with me is Road to Hire’s Summer U program. It helped me step out of my comfort zone, build up my confidence and learn to ask for help when needed.”

For more than 40 years, CIS-Charlotte has surrounded students and families with support throughout their K-12 journey and beyond. Road to Hire builds on that foundation by supporting young adults through college and into meaningful careers.

Together, we can help more young adults move forward with the relationships, resources and opportunities they need to shape their futures.

We’re excited about what this partnership can make possible for students, families and our community.

🎒✏️ READY. SET. LEARN! ✏️🎒

The energy at Highland Renaissance Academy was ALL THE WAY UP! 🙌📚

What a day! Students received bookbags packed with supplies from Hearst Corporation, HRA’s uniform closet + food pantry got a fresh restock, Whataburger meals and swag, and students connected with CIS alumni who volunteered their time to pour back into the next generation. 💙

We celebrated someone who makes that support possible every day: CIS Student Support Specialist Cameron Monroe! 🎉 Cameron, thank you for showing up, pouring into students and being such an important part of the Highland Renaissance Academy community. We are SO grateful for all you do! 💙
