Why am I so vocal about what school counselors do? Why am I slightly obnoxious at times with our program data? Because if we aren’t the one sharing, who will?!

Transitions like the one we are about to experience this next year are movements in the WRONG direction, and are reasons why advocacy, data transparency, and professional awareness are so critical.

B-LS 4. Self-motivation and self-direction for learning

We are there to step in and assist when students lack motivation or don’t know how to tap into their own internal drive to succeed. We help connect basic academic skills to long-term life skills, interests students have, or goals they may have for themselves. We are there to reframe negative perceptions or set-backs into resilience-based motivators.

Playing a little bit of catch up today with a few back to back Student Learning Strategies!

“B-LS 3.” says that students will develop time-management, organizational and study skills throughout their academic careers.

How do we reinforce this within our program with our 6-8 graders? By making agendas readily available for students who may need one. By making time management and task prioritization tools accessible in grab-and-go formats. By introducing students to the Eisenhower matrix within the first month of each school year. By creating a library of short format how-to videos for students to view/review at home about managing deadlines and assignments. The list goes on and on…

LOCAL decisions require a LOCAL response.

That’s why my twins and I are staying within our community today to advocate and speak up for public education instead of going to Raleigh.

The second student behavior learning strategy is one of my favorites in application. “B-LS 2.” encourages students to develop “creative approach[es] to learning, tasks and problem solving”.

I love giving my students the authority to think outside of the box and use their creativity to tackle perceived obstacles ahead of them.

We are now switching gears to give focus to the 30 student behavior standards, which are divided equally between 3 domains. I’ll give focus first to the Learning Strategies.

“B-LS 1.” states that students will develop “critical thinking skills to make informed decisions”

This begins early in childhood and requires reinforcement and modifications as times and technology change and shift. Students now have to be encouraged to think for themselves rather than seeking out what others perspectives are on the internet.

Students should be able to challenge information given to them, gather information, and filter their sources to come to their own unique perspective or conclusion by the time they are in high school. They should be able to form their own opinions and ask thoughtful questions. It is through these interactions that students not only learn about the world around them, but about themselves as well.

So, to recap the SIX Student Mindset standards that school counselors as tasked with implementing into their programming from elementary to high school, here they are - and again, this is just 1/6 of the total standards school counselors implement through their comprehensive school counseling programs.

Later today we will start on the first of ten Learning Strategies under the student behavior strategies. Stay tuned. ⏳

Yesterday got away from me, and I forgot to post the final ASCA Student Mindset standard, so here we go!

“M 6.” says that school counselors should help students with “Understanding that postsecondary education and lifelong learning are necessary for long-term success”

SO MANY of the students I work with year over year have unrealistic perceptions of the level of effort or education needed to get to where they want to be. Students who want to become doctors, but who say they don’t want to go to college. Students who think that becoming an “influencer” is a career you apply and get hired for and that automatically pays the bills. The list goes on and on.

We aren’t here to crush students dreams or goals. We aren’t going to tell students that their goals are impossible. But we are going to shed a realistic glimpse of life to come in many of these discussions. We are always going to encourage a solid back up plan for just about anything, honestly - but especially our students aspiring to play any professional sport. We are going to stress how learning and education doesn’t just cease at high school or college graduation.
