Living Lines - Studio of Creative Dance Creative Contemporary Indian Ballet

Here at Living Lines you will experience the dance form that has the inherent grammar of Indian classical dance and yet is innovative and contemporary. We focus on numerous methods to understand the sense of rhythm, imagination and improvisation blending in graceful body movements and expression thereby defining, shaping and creating our unique style of dance, our identity. The techniques that we

practice are extremely enjoyable, fulfilling and a great way of mind-body workout, at the same time are also intellectually rigorous disciplines involving the use of complex choreography, expression and movements. We use our original ideas and own movement vocabularies to develop dance pieces in order to communicate our feelings, ideas, and understandings.This technique helps in developing creative skills as we draw upon a variety of sources such as literature, media texts, images, historical and current events, topics and themes to improvise and integrate those into our dance pieces. Movement skills are developed during each practice session with ongoing dance explorations and creations rather than focusing on isolated, repetitive steps. The structure of each practice session will vary, however these are some of the important elements that each session will be comprised of -
• Warm up and exercises
• Level appropriate dance steps/movement combinations
• Group activities including mirroring, shadowing, shaping, practicing skills etc.
• Level appropriate choreographic compositions
• Use of variety of styles of music
• Share dances with each other taking turn being the audience
• Compose dances for Charlotte based programs

We shot this dance video a couple of months back but didn’t get to share it with you all. The day we filmed it holds a special place in our heart as we all were meeting for the first time in more than a year. It was such a memorable and lovely experience to create and shoot this dance with such an amazing group of dancers like Sudeshna Dey Shilpa Dey Tiya Mukherjee Tiyasa Roy Tania Roy Kalpita Sen. So very lucky to be able to dance with such good friends! ❤️❤️

March 7, 2020 was the last time we met as a group at the studio. It has now been over a year that we have sought ways to continue dance practice virtually. Our bedrooms, living-rooms , garage and backyard have replaced the studio. We have managed through laggy zoom connections, internet cut out, poor audio quality, inadequate lighting and many more challenges to keep our virtual classes going.

Though it’s been a blessing to have the opportunity to interact with my dance friends every weekend, I have missed the hands on connection with them, the satisfaction of dancing with and in the presence of the team and all the fun we used to have during practice at the studio.

Sharing this video from one of our regular classes in 2020 (right before the pandemic) with full disclosure that the recording was only meant to be used for practice and that we have paused in between and have made errors 😊.

On the occasion of International Dance Day want to share the incredible feeling and immense energy of group dancing with you all!

It is about loving everything about someone including all of their imperfections. The message of the song captures what we all can resonate with - to be seen, loved and be accepted...just the way we are without having to change a thing.

“Singaar Ko Rehne Do” written by Gulzar is an exquisite composition inspired by Rabindranath Tagore. The message undoubtedly is along the same lines as Joel’s and one we can all relate to....

Fall is here and so is the time to celebrate Bengali’s favorite festival Durga Puja! Bengalis, wherever they are, can smell the “Pujo” in the air at this time of the year. Across the globe preparations are in full swing to welcome Durga for her short annual visit to her maternal home. But as with everything else, the Pujo celebrations will be different this year as we continue to hunker down in our homes and distance ourselves from society.

While we’d rather not have had to experience this pandemic in the first place, we can certainly shift our perspective to one of appreciation for the silver linings and the good it brought out in us. The pandemic has taught us to not take anything for granted and appreciate the small things in life. If there’s ever been a time to be grateful for our health, family and everyone around us, it’s now. Throughout it all, there have been reminders for us to make a deliberate effort to value simple things and make the most of what we have. On that note, let’s take this opportunity to enjoy our much awaited Pujo the best we can and usher in the festive spirit.

If someone told me back in January of this year as we (my daughter and I) were traveling back to Charlotte after a fun filled holiday in India, that we’d be stuck at home for the remainder of the year due to a a pandemic, would I have believed them? Most likely not. But in a matter of mere months our lives turned upside down. Our way of living, interacting, working, and socializing changed drastically with the snap of a finger...

The dance “Naina- Hope binds us together” is an attempt to represent the exhaustion and stress we are coping with since the COVID-19 virus came about, following months of restrictions and distancing from loved ones. The presentation ends on a note of hope for the crisis to be over soon with us coming out together, stronger on the other side!

This has always been my favorite song by D. L. Ray, but I had never thought of dancing to it until a coupe of months back when I came across this beautiful rendition. The very first time I heard this song I felt the urge to dance to it.
