Sensory Processing, Emotions & Dysregulation
Why non-speakers have been right all along
“Sensory processing is affecting emotions and vice versa.”
— Rafael
Research confirms what non-speaking autistic individuals have always told us: sensory processing and emotional state are deeply connected.
A major neurophysiologic review found that up to 96% of autistic children experience sensory processing differences—these differences are neurological, not behavioral (Marco et al., 2011).
Anxiety can intensify sensory input, making sounds louder, lights brighter, and body awareness harder to access. What is often labeled as “behavior” is more accurately understood as dysregulation—a nervous system response to overwhelming sensory and emotional input.
When we presume competence, use respectful language, and support regulation, we reduce sensory load and increase access to communication.
At Spell to Communicate Rx and Accelerate Academy, we view dysregulation as information—not behavior—and build supports that honor the whole nervous system.

S2C is Life Changing ❤️

Some people believe that if their loved one knows how to spell, can text, type, or already uses a communication device, then Spelling to Communicate isn’t something they should consider.

Some have even told me it feels like a step backward.

I understand the confusion. I had many of the same assumptions when we began this journey. I believed that because my son had words, verbal ability, and could text or type on a keyboard, he wouldn’t benefit from this approach.

What I’ve learned instead is that my son has "unreliable speech." He says many things, but they aren’t always what he truly wants to communicate.

He repeats phrases, runs through scripts, gets stuck in loops. Rinse and repeat, every single day.

I’m not an expert. I’m a mom learning how to be a communication partner for my 21-year-old son with autism. And what I’ve learned has changed how I understand communication entirely.

Spelling to Communicate isn’t about intelligence or knowing words. It’s about motor control.

Many autistic individuals - especially unreliable or nonspeaking communicators - know exactly what they want to say, but their bodies often won't cooperate. Initiating, sequencing, and stopping movements can be incredibly difficult, even when thoughts are clear.

I’ve read that many spellers tell their communication partner: "Listen to what I spell, not what I say."

Speech and language are often treated as the same thing, but neurologically they are very different.

Language is a cognitive function—it lives in the brain and involves understanding and organizing thoughts.

Speech, on the other hand, is a motor function. It requires precise coordination of breath, tongue, lips, jaw, and vocal cords, all moving quickly and in perfect sequence.

For many unreliable speakers, the challenge isn’t understanding - it’s motor planning. Spelling to communicate reduces that motor load. Instead of coordinating many complex movements at once, the individual focuses on one intentional movement at a time.

Spelling doesn’t create language - it reveals it.

Typing and texting actually demand a lot of fine motor control: isolating fingers, maintaining posture, and moving quickly and accurately. For many autistic individuals, those tiny movements are exhausting and inconsistent. The thoughts are there, but the fingers don’t always follow.

Spelling to communicate leans more on gross motor movement - reaching, pointing, tapping - often easier for the body to organize. Slower pacing, one letter at a time, and clear targets give the nervous system time to engage.

This type of communication isn’t less advanced - it’s more accessible.

Spelling happens in a calm, regulated environment with a trusted partner. That connection matters. Pressure and speed can shut communication down; safety and pacing can open it up.

This isn’t about dependency. It’s about access.

Just like glasses aren’t a step backward for vision, or ramps aren’t a step backward for mobility, spelling to communicate isn’t a regression. It’s a bridge.

We’re still learning.
Some practice sessions are chaotic and unfocused.
Some practice sessions are amazing and leave me in tears.

Communication isn’t defined by how fast or typical it looks - it’s defined by whether someone is finally being heard.

I’ll keep sharing what we’re learning, in hopes it may help even just one family hear their loved one’s true voice.

As we wrap up 2025, my heart feels incredibly full. 💛

This year has been nothing short of a blessing. I truly get to do what I love every single day, surrounded by the most amazing, dedicated, compassionate group of teachers. Watching our students grow, find confidence, and unlock their potential reminds me daily why this work matters so deeply.

I’m also overflowing with excitement as I prepare to graduate as an S2C practitioner in just a few weeks. This journey has stretched me, humbled me, and strengthened my belief in presuming competence and honoring every voice. I am so grateful for the mentors, spellers, and families who trusted me along the way.

At the same time, seeing Voices Unlocked Foundation continue to grow and Accelerate Academy thrive has been beyond anything I could have imagined. What started as a vision has become a community—one rooted in literacy, communication, inclusion, and hope.

As 2025 comes to a close, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude—for my team, our families, our students, and the purpose-driven work we get to do together. Here’s to closing this year with joy and stepping into the next chapter with faith, excitement, and so much love. ✨

A huge thank you to Dylan for taking the time to practice S2C – Spelling to Communicate with me. Your patience and your mission to support practitioners so we can reach as many non-speaking and unreliable speakers as possible is truly admirable.

I also had the incredible opportunity to watch Dylan and Lana race at the Mighty Striders track meet yesterday. Seeing them push themselves, compete, and shine on the track was absolutely inspiring 🏅. It is an honor to have both of them in my life and to witness their passion, determination, and strength.

So grateful for these moments and for the amazing people I get to share them with 🙌

🌟 Celebrating Tyler — A Voice Through Art and Spelling 🌟

This week, I had the honor of commissioning a series of beautiful pieces of artwork from Tyler, a talented 23-year-old non-speaking artist who communicates through Spelling to Communicate (S2C).

This is from his mom Judy: Tyler not only created these stunning visuals, he also added his own captions and reflections. His words say it all:

“I APPRECIATE YOU GETTING MY WORDS OUT THERE.”
“I FEEL LIKE I HAVE PURPOSE SHARING MY EXPERIENCE.”
“I’D LIKE TO SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT SPELLING AND THAT NONSPEAKERS DESERVE AN EDUCATION.”

A year ago, we asked Tyler if he was comfortable with his family sharing his “spells” with others. His response:

“I DON’T MIND AT ALL. IN FACT, I LIKE IT. ESPECIALLY IF IT HELPS SOMEONE UNDERSTAND ME OR SOMEONE EXPERIENCING SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT I’M EXPERIENCING.”

💙 Advocacy is at the heart of this. Tyler’s courage and creativity remind us that communication is not limited to speech, it’s about connection, understanding, and opportunity.

🎨 Artwork available:
🩵 8x10 prints (in 11x14 mats) — $50 for a set of 4
💛 13x19 poster prints — $30 each

All proceeds support Tyler’s advocacy and help raise awareness for nonspeakers everywhere.

Spelling has changed his life forever and it’s changing the world one letter at a time.

🌟 What an incredible weekend at the I-ASC Motormorphosis Conference! 🌟

I feel so honored to have met Dylan and his amazing mom, Allison, in person. Dylan’s Spelling Journey is nothing short of inspirational. His words, strength, and clarity are a powerful reminder of why we do this work.

As I walk the path to become a Spelling to Communicate (S2C) practitioner, I’m filled with hope and purpose. The spelling community is unlike any other — supportive, empowering, and united in one mission: to ensure nonspeakers and unreliable speakers are finally heard.

Dylan said it best: “Apraxia will only be understood by those who live it.” This work is not easy, but it is sacred. And this post, like his, is for the unsung heroes — the spellers, parents, CRPs, and practitioners who show up every single day.

💬 We see you. We hear you. We believe in you.

🕸️🕸️ Day 1 of S2C training = Mind. Blown. 🧠💥
As I sat at the Motormorphosis Conference by I-ASC, I developed this analogy and it hit me hard:

Spelling to Communicate (S2C) weaves a web in the brain, linking sensory input, motor planning, and cognitive intent, just like a spider spins a web, thread by thread.

Here’s what I mean:

✨ 1. Sensory Input = The Anchor Threads
The brain uses touch, sight, balance, and movement to understand the body in space. These sensory systems lay the foundation.

🧠 2. Motor Planning = Spinning the Silk
The speller must transform a thought into movement:
“Where is my hand?” → “Where is the letter?” → “Now move to it.”
This is praxis, where many nonspeakers face breakdowns due to apraxia.

✋💬 3. Motor Ex*****on = Thread by Thread
Just like a spider moves with intention, spellers learn to control impulses, regulate muscle tone, and follow through—letter by letter.

🔁 4. Neuroplasticity = Strengthening the Web
With every session, those brain pathways grow stronger. Communication becomes less effortful, more fluid, more them.

🌟 The result?
A complete, beautiful neural web—allowing nonspeaking individuals to express their intellect, humor, and humanity—one letter at a time.

Feeling inspired. Feeling grateful. Feeling ready. 💬💪🕸️
