How Is Sand Made?
Building on yesterday’s learning, the children explored how sand is formed using a mortar and pestle. We examined different types of shells, discussing their unique qualities and characteristics. The children then compared the shells to a bowl of sand, carefully observing the similarities and differences between the two.
Next, the children were invited to grind the shells into smaller pieces. As they worked together, they discovered how tiny fragments of shells can eventually become sand, gaining a hands-on understanding of this natural process.

Exploring Sand
This morning, the children explored sand through a hands-on sensory investigation. After making observations about the texture of the sand, we discussed why glue might help the sand stick to the paper. The children quickly connected this idea to their experiences at the beach and wondered why sand sticks to their skin when there is no glue involved.
Together, we explored this question and discussed how water can help sand cling to surfaces. The children observed how the sand moved across the glue and experimented with different ways of pouring, sprinkling, and spreading it. Through this exploration, they tested their ideas, asked thoughtful questions, and discovered more about the unique properties of sand.
