What would it feel like to survive 47 days at sea?🛶🌊
Our 8th graders stepped into the story of Unbroken: Young Readers Edition through an immersive classroom survival simulation. After reading about Louis Zamperini’s harrowing experience, students constructed their own model liferaft to replicate the dimensions of Zamperini‘s raft, experiencing firsthand just how limited and cramped the space was.
Then came the real challenge: could they work together in that space?
Cramped quarters quickly tested patience, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. More importantly, the experience gave students a tangible way to develop empathy and connect with Lewis‘s extraordinary resilience in a way that went far beyond simply reading about it.
Sometimes the best way to understand a story is to step inside it.
At CJDS, learning doesn’t just happen on the page- it comes to life through hands-on, meaningful experiences.

These cuties are building valuable cognitive, math, and social skills through engaging play; and improving memory, focus and pattern recognition. But- shhhh- they’re just having fun! 🤩

🤚 CJDS middle schoolers lent a helping hand by packing bags for delivery to support refugee resettlement families in our community. This week, we celebrate the chag of Sukkot, a time when we remember our own history of displacement, hardship, and living without a permanent home. It was especially meaningful for our students to put those lessons into action by helping welcome and support families beginning a new chapter in our community.

🍋 This is how CJDS does Sukkot!

🤗Students in various grade levels were tasked with building a sukkah out of a given material- cereal boxes for 3rd, weaving ribbons for 4th, and newspapers for 5th.

In the end, each Sukkah stood on its own, complete with s’chach from Mariashi’s own back yard! Students even enjoyed eating their snacks in the sukkah they built.

Do you know the requirements for a proper sukkah? Your child sure does! Ask them tonight over dinner- perhaps on your own sukkah at home 🏠

At CJDS, Social - Emotional learning is an important part of the whole school experience. From our youngest learners through our older students, we intentionally teach the skills that help children understand themselves, navigate relationships, manage big feelings, and handle life‘s challenges. It’s one of the things that makes our school community so special. ✨
And in kindergarten, SEL can look pretty simple - and pretty sweet. 🥰
favorite tradition in kindergarten is reading, Junie B Jones - a lovable character who experiences many of the same friendships, feelings, challenges, and everyday adventures that our kindergartners experience themselves. In the chapter we read today, Junie B was afraid of the dark when it was time to go to sleep.
After reading, we turned to the story into an SEL conversation about fear and the strategies we can use when we feel scared at bedtime. Our kindergartners shared what helps them feel safe and comfortable when those nighttime worries creep in.💛🧸
This is what SEL looks like at CJDS: taking everyday moments and turning them into opportunities to build skills that children can carry with them far beyond the classroom.

🪄 What a magical day in middle school today! Sixth graders participated in a Harry Potter inspired murder mystery event! Using murder mystery activities in middle school helps students build critical thinking, reading comprehension, communication and social-emotional skills. Who done it?! Ask your child who was the guilty character, and who solved the mystery! ⭐️

🤗 CJDS 4th graders know soil! In science, students are learning about the six main types of soil, classified primarily by the size and proportion of their mineral particles.

We may be small, but we bring the heart and the opportunity for everyone to participate in a team.
This week was the very first volley ball game for CJDS! The kids had grit, cooperation and good sportsmanship throughout the game! 💪🏽
Our cross country team also had a meet and ran like fierce competitors.
