“Shared knowledge is the best knowledge.”

For Jessica Lee, Charlotte Latin’s new Upper School English Department Chair, the classroom is a place for students to wrestle with ideas, learn from one another and discover confidence in their own interpretations.

Now in her fourth year at Latin, Jessica brings that same spirit of collaboration to her new leadership role, where thoughtful conversation, creativity and a willingness to see things differently shape the work of the English Department.

What happens when we shift the focus from achievement to agency?

Head of Middle School Louisa Polos has been thinking about that question as both an educator and a parent. In a review recently published on the website of the Association for Academic Leaders, Louisa considered The Disengaged Teen by Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop — and what its lessons can mean for how we support young people.

Reflecting further on those ideas, Louisa says, “When students are actively engaged in the process of learning, we provide them with the key to leading a meaningful life.”

So how do we help students get there?

Louisa explores how parents and educators can help young people follow their curiosity and take greater ownership of their learning. As she wrote, “Agency matters, and so do relationships.”

Rain couldn’t stop the fun! 🏈🦅

Touchdown Tailgate brought together everything we love about our Latin community: Hawk spirit, great energy, and even better company. A huge thank you to Parents’ Council for hosting and to our incredible volunteers who helped make it all happen.

We’re already counting down until we can bring the Latin community together and run it back next year! 💙

The Class of 2027 is officially stepping into its senior year. 🎓

Yesterday morning, 151 seniors gathered in Thies Auditorium for Convocation Exercises, marking the beginning of their final year at Charlotte Latin.

They were reminded of how far they’ve come, encouraged to step up and lead, and challenged by Director of Student Leadership Dr. Mason West III to carry three things with them into the year ahead: Have the courage to be you. Have the courage to be curious. Have the courage to be just.

“The world does not need sameness,” he told them, before leaving the Class of 2027 with one final charge: “You go build us a better world.”

This year, art class for some Latin second graders began with teamwork. 🤝

Lower School Art Teacher Elizabeth Faulkner paired students up and gave them oil pastels and large sheets of colored paper: when one student drew on their half of the paper, the other student mirrored the image on their side, whether it was a butterfly or an abstract shape.

Faulkner explains, “We were teaching them to understand symmetry and balance — and to engage with each other.” When experimentation meets collaboration, the result is fabulous bilateral art! 🎨
