📣 FACULTY SHOUT OUT! 📣

We love seeing our faculty take their expertise beyond the classroom and into the community! ❤️🐾

A huge Husky shout out to Dr. Kelli A. Uitenham, founder of the Brain Talk Foundation, for continuing to raise awareness about the risks and lasting impacts of head injuries in youth sports. 🧠🏈⚽🏀

Dr. Kelli’s work reminds us that concussion education isn’t just about what happens on the field—it’s about protecting young brains, empowering families and coaches, and helping young athletes thrive long after the game ends.

👏🏾 Keep doing the work, Dr. Kelli! We see you, and we’re proud to have you representing our Charlotte CSD family!

📬 More picture mail from Camp Zeno!
Meanwhile... our Charlotte Speechies are somewhere in the Vermont mountains out here collecting clinical hours, changing lives, and apparently forgetting the rest of us exist. 😂
We can't even be mad. They're gaining incredible hands-on experience, making lifelong memories, and representing Northeastern Charlotte so well.
Just remember who was cheering you on when you come back with all those stories... and don't forget the souvenirs. 😏❤️🖤

Yesterday, our equity-minded graduate students in the DEI in SLP course at Northeastern University Charlotte welcomed a group of brilliant middle school girls to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for an afternoon of connection, creativity, and communication advocacy for all!
The Dottie Rose Foundation and Digi Bridge are incredible community partners whose goals center around bridging the gender gap in the technology field — envisioning a future where computer science education is accessible, inclusive, and equitable for all, regardless of gender, and a technology industry that values and benefits from the diverse perspectives and contributions of women.
Across four interactive sessions, we explored:
Diversity & representation in Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences — the girls learned about our scope of practice and the need for diverse representation, asking all of their burning questions about the field of SLP.
Belonging, authenticity & communication confidence — the girls were empowered by affirmations and practiced crafting their own elevator pitches.
Communication justice & technology — the girls used AAC boards to see firsthand how design shapes access to communication.
Imagining & inventing communication technology — the girls designed their own apps for communication access, wrapping up with a creative share-out full of transformative ideas.
This event gave our graduate students hands-on experience bringing the values of equity, access, and belonging into authentic community spaces, working alongside historically excluded youth.
Grateful for a space to imagine what communication access can look like — one brilliant idea (and one elevator pitch) at a time.

📬 We got picture mail! ❤️🐾

Look at our Charlotte Speechies all the way out at Camp Zeno representing Northeastern! We may be a few states away from the rest of the pack, but these Huskies are making sure Charlotte is well represented. 🐺❤️

Nothing makes faculty happier than random photos from students living their best clinical lives. (Seriously... keep them coming! 😂)

We're so proud of these future SLPs for embracing every opportunity to learn, grow, and serve—while reminding everyone that the Charlotte pack travels well.

Have fun, learn lots, and don't forget... your faculty are absolutely going to post every picture you send us. 📸😄

Freedom School! How do you feel?!

Our answer? Inspired. Grateful. Hopeful.
This week, our Northeastern Charlotte Speechies had the privilege of partnering with Freedom School to teach scholars about brain health, concussion awareness, stroke recognition (BE FAST), and hearing health through hands-on activities, games, stories, obstacle courses, and hearing screenings.
But the biggest lessons weren't just for the children—they were for our students.
💬 "My biggest takeaway is just how far our reach as SLPs can go. Representation matters, and that connection can make all the difference."

💬 "Children are capable of learning much more than we often give them credit for. When we present complex topics in engaging, meaningful ways, they rise to the occasion."

💬 "The concussion goggles, games, and interactive activities showed me that health and safety education doesn't have to be boring—it can be memorable and fun."

💬 "I learned that collaboration and asking questions make us stronger clinicians. Every child is different, and every child deserves an approach that meets their needs."

💬 "Watching students connect today's lesson to their own lives reminded me that education creates lasting impact. They weren't just listening—they were understanding."

💬 "Many children simply don't learn these topics unless someone teaches them. It was incredible to watch their confidence and understanding grow throughout the day."

At Northeastern Charlotte, we believe the community is part of the curriculum. These experiences don't just prepare our students to become exceptional speech-language pathologists—they prepare them to become advocates, educators, and leaders who understand that communication and health equity begin long before someone walks into a clinic.

To our Freedom School scholars: thank you for your curiosity, your laughter, your thoughtful questions, and your enthusiasm.

And to our incredible students: thank you for reminding us that learning is most powerful when it serves others.
Because we aren't simply preparing students to work in communities... we're preparing them to become part of communities. ❤️🐾
