PD students are passionate about many things, and it certainly shows during club fairs! 😁

This week, Middle and Upper School students learned about the variety of extracurricular groups they can be involved in, ranging from interest groups for books and languages, to identity and affinity groups, or community engagement and service clubs. We love seeing our students pursue their passions, get excited, and join together for a shared purpose! 👏

Our third graders have been tapping into their creative sides lately, and we caught them behind the scenes as they learned how to make clay pinch pots and play a song comprised of many different parts and instruments! 🎶🧑‍🎨

Middle School is a critical time for students to grow, form their identities, and learn to navigate challenges, both in and out of the classroom. PD wants to make sure our students are equipped to handle all kinds of situations they may encounter and to create a sense of belonging for themselves and others!

At the start of the year, our Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, in partnership with the Middle School Leadership Team, works with sixth graders to learn how powerful their words can be through discussions of real-world scenarios that explore themes of empathy, courage, open-mindedness, and respect.

These sessions are part of a larger learning journey that begins with students exploring what it means to be an “upstander” during Courageous Conversations in fifth grade and continues throughout Middle School. Later this fall, seventh graders will explore personal and social identity, while eighth graders will reflect on their core values and how they engage with others. Supporting the whole student is central to our mission of developing young global citizens who pursue excellence and make a difference!

What builds community better than rushing down rapids and free-falling from the top of the trees?? 😄

This week, our ninth graders journeyed to the National Whitewater Center down the road for a day full of adventurous fun and valuable class bonding! Through rafting, ropes courses, trust/strategy activities, rock climbing, and more, students built on to this fun tradition that helps start the year and prepares our freshmen for their next four years ahead alongside each other.

The start of the school year is a great time to set intentions, and that's exactly what some of our fourth-grade students did this week! 🌟

Through a creative and meditative "zentangle"-style art activity, Ms. Cook's class reflected on their chosen words of the year, which act as a theme to center their personal goals and growth. The pieces show their hands, along with colorful watercolor paint and several small goals, providing a snapshot of their unique identities and hopes for the year ahead. 🎨

We're excited to see our students setting goals, thinking about their values, and tapping into their creative sides! 👏

This school year is the first in which our students can earn our new Diploma in Entrepreneurial Studies (DES), and several Upper Schoolers began working toward it through an innovative course over the summer!

PD made waves with our first-in-the-nation Global Studies Diploma, and now students have another incredible opportunity to add to their academic experience with a focus on entrepreneurship. Students in the summer course actually got to explore the crossover between the two areas of study, learn from each other, and research entrepreneurial solutions to global issues they identified.

The course culminated in presentations on each student's solution to the problem they were interested in, ranging from tools to prevent workplace accidents to sustainability initiatives and more! This kind of interdisciplinary thinking can be seen all over PD's curriculum, and we love seeing students broaden their perspectives and come together across their interests.

We have some exciting new spaces on campus this year, and students and teachers are already putting them to use! 🌟

In the Fine Arts building, we now have "The REC (Record, Explore, Create) Room," full of innovative audio tech for students to learn to produce, podcast, and more. Over in Dickson-Hemby, the IDEASxChange now has a dedicated space for robotics and drones, while down the hall, we have new sixth-grade science labs and a revamped math/finance classroom. Trek to the library and you'll find brand new Middle School math classrooms and the MS math faculty hub – plus a new cozy corner with booth seating for students to study, catch up, and relax! Finally, in Providence Hall, we have some added space for our Kindergarten classes.

We are proud to be a campus that constantly grows, evolves, and innovates, and we can't wait to see the incredible ways our Chargers use these new spaces! 🤩

FDOC* at PD on August 18 was chock-full of excitement and anticipation, filled with Ferryboat drop-off reunions between faculty and returning students and venturing in for that FCOD**! Go Chargers!
