Congratulations to the 17 members of the Class of 2027 who were recently named National Merit Semifinalists or Commended Students.

Of the more than 1.2 million students nationwide who took the 2025 PSAT, approximately 16,000 high school seniors earned qualifying scores to be named Semifinalists this year. They represent the top 1% of test-takers nationwide and include some of North Carolina's highest-scoring students. Semifinalists have the opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be awarded this spring.

About 34,000 high school seniors earned the designation of Commended Student. Although they do not continue in the scholarship competition, they placed among the top 50,000 test-takers nationwide.

We are so proud of these students and this well-deserved recognition of their academic achievement!

For our 15th annual All-School Convocation, former Head of School Mark Reed returned to Country Day as the morning’s guest speaker and received a standing ovation. In his remarks, he asked students and faculty to set a personal goal for the year, offering three simple ideas to guide it: care about others by being good humans, create new friendships, and commit to giving your best in the classroom and community.

Every year, the International Parents Annual Welcome Reception and the POCIS Back to School Cookout, both held last week, capture the spirit of community and provide a joyful way to launch the school year.

The welcome reception brings together families with international heritage, those who have lived abroad, and community members eager to connect and celebrate our global community.

People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS) supports families of color, the school’s DEIB initiatives, and serves as a space of unity and belonging. POCIS seeks opportunities to support and strengthen our community, ensuring full participation and inclusion for everyone.

Thank you to alumna and clinical psychologist Dr. Katie Daniel ’12, who delivered wise words of advice to the Class of 2027 at Senior Convocation.

Katie drew the perfect distinction between goals and values: goals are destinations; values are the compass. She said, “You can fail to reach a goal; you cannot fail a value. There is no world in which you “complete” kindness, or “run out of” curiosity, or get waitlisted from generosity. A value is not something a committee grants you or takes away. No test score can give it to you, and no rejection letter can revoke it. It is yours, on your best day and your worst one.”
