Laboratory for Innovative Housing
The lab is a venue for students and professors from architecture and engineering to collaborate on multidisciplinary research and teaching.
The Laboratory for Innovative Housing is part of the IDEAS (Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustainability) Center that is housed in the Lee College of Engineering; and, is part of the cIBDR (Center for Integrated Building Design Research) that is housed in the College of Arts & Architecture. It is located in Cameron Hall on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus.
In terms of the three aspect of the triple bottom line (TBL / 3 Ps / 3 Es) for sustainable development, the social aspect is the least understood. UNC Charlotte is competing in the U.S. Department of Energy 2013 Solar Decathlon. One of the innovative features of the house is the exterior wall construction - a continuously insulated, precast geopolymer concrete panel with capillary tubes for hydronic heating and cooling. Earlier in the week students worked with tradesmen at the Metromont Corporation precast concrete plant in Charlotte to form and pour two panels.
