My most recent studio (the one I am taking down today) is the first studio where I learned how to hang bass traps in the very important but often neglected wall to ceiling corners. Bass congregates in all corners, not just the common 4 corners at each edge of a room. The wall to floor corners are often hard to come by in terms of floor real estate. So I knew if I wanted my room to sound tighter, I had to tackle this project. The bonus more “bang for your buck” treatment comes from spacing your trap off of the corner at a 45 degree-ish angle so that sound gets absorbed on the way into the trap, bounces off the wall, and gets absorbed again (vs. having it flush on the wall). It also absorbs to a lower frequency this way (because...science). I had just come back from a mission trip in NYC in 2013. I am NOT the most handy person, but I felt inspired by the work we did. I found a video on YouTube () where this guy drilled eye hooks into the edges of his traps, and using some distance formula, was able to exact a nice placement of those traps. I copied as much of his strategy as I could. Wish I would have saved my room response measurements from before and after but it was drastic in both freq response and RT60 of modal response. My placement wasn’t the prettiest but it got the job done. If you’re thinking about doing this, go all in! It’s worth it, I promise. Special thanks to as always for the killer products. Even did this method with a Monster Trap (which I was dubious about it holding... 8 years later, still up). @ Charlotte, North Carolina

Scene from the first “cookup” in the kitchen of the new house last night (also pictured: Chinese takeout since there was no actual cooking involved 😂). That’s right... my wife and I bought our first house together at the end of February! Since then, it’s been “go go go” on all things house! I was taking a break from our busy moving schedule to keep the creative muscle in shape. The bad news is that I will be taking a brief hiatus from making tracks to focus on the move. I am sad that I have made my last song in my current studio of 8 years (which was an amazing studio). But...the good news is when I’m back and running, this will be by far my favorite studio space to date! Can’t wait! Stay tuned!

A legend in the pro audio community passed away over the weekend. Matter of fact, legend is absolutely putting it too mildly...

Rupert Neve. Your inventions have inspired and empowered musicians, producers, and mixing and mastering engineers during the past and present and will continue to be coveted by many for years to come! On top of that, from interviews I’ve watched, I can tell you were a really kind person and sharp guy; you will be missed!

I came into audio at the dawn of digital audio becoming mainstream (circa 2001). Being completely self taught, my appreciation for analog flavor and saturation came WAY too late. So it took me a long time to come around to what everyone saw in his products, especially the Neve 1073, 1081, and 88R series. But after realizing and appreciating just how much character his preamps and channel strips have and what their “in the box” emulation equivalents alone have done for my sound, I’ve become a huge fanboy of Neve like so many of you!

While this is a few days late, if you haven’t done so, let’s raise that red k**b a few db steps higher today and reflect on what this man has done for the audio community!

I was proud to executive produce, record, mix, and master all 9 songs on the new record. Yes, Pete Wurthy is me. But.... you gotta create your own opportunities from time to time and I love the way this came out. Are you feeling generous today? Please give a follow, like, and click on his bio to stream the album!
