You don’t need to become more entertaining. This is not a circus. 🎪

You DO need to give students a way into the learning.

1️⃣ Give the learning a destination.�Imagine traveling across the country without a road map or GPS. And no, don’t just “stick” up learning targets to please admin. Students should KNOW what they’re learning, why, and how it connects.
Ask: “What did we learn yesterday that will help us today?”�“Where could we use this?”�“How will we know we’ve got it?”

2️⃣ Want better responses? GIVE TIME TO THINK. And talk.�Build in a stop-and-jot before asking students to share. Teach INTO structured turn-and-talks so it’s not just one student doing all the talking.
“Partner A, explain your thinking. Partner B, listen, then add on or ask a question. Then switch.”
What are YOU doing? Walking around, listening, supporting where needed, and giving specific praise and feedback.
“You explained WHY you thought that. Now ask your partner what they think.”

3️⃣ Be transparent about calling on students.�Everyone should know that thinking and contributing are part of the expectation. Teach that mistakes belong in the learning, too.
“I’m giving you two minutes to think. You may jot down some ideas. ___, I’d like you to start us off when we come back together. ___, I’d like you to add on.”
That’s pre-calling. You’re giving students a heads-up and time to prepare. As you build toward cold calling or random calling, keep that thinking time and support in place.

Boom! Respectful AND sets the bar high.

‼️Can we PLEASE stop telling new teachers they need MORE STRUCTURE without showing them how to actually BUILD it?!

Being a new teacher is scary enough! There are a million balls to juggle, and it takes time to figure out what actually deserves your attention.

Sadly, most teachers, myself included, were never taught how to build the foundation BEFORE managing behavior.

So we spend our days searching for the next behavior management strategy. And when that one wears off or loses its spark, we’re onto the next!

Before you know it, you’re playing defense ALL YEAR!

After a decade of teaching and a few BIG epiphanies, I finally GOT teaching. Like, REALLY got it!

I realized that the more I built WITH my students, the less I had to manage FOR them.

And THAT changed everything.

I started developing frameworks around high expectations, student voice, relationships, and routines that students actually understood and took ownership of.

Eventually, I started teaching other teachers how to do the same.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me in my first year:

You don’t need to become an expert in managing 25 different behaviors. You need to learn how to build a classroom that doesn’t require you to manage every little thing!

Will you still have behavior problems? Of course! But you won’t spend your entire day reacting to them.

IT WILL ALL WORK OUT! But there’s a better way to get there.🩷
