Five minutes doesn’t sound like much.

Until you lose the same five minutes every. single. day. 😂

⏱️ Five minutes getting everyone started.

⏱️ Five minutes recovering from a transition.

⏱️ Five minutes repeating directions while three students ask what they’re supposed to be doing.

Five minutes × 180 school days = 15 HOURS.

That is nearly two full school days spent repeating, redirecting, and waiting on ONE classroom moment.

So this Labor Day, don’t spend your entire weekend searching Pinterest for 57 random ideas.

Pick the moment costing you the most time or energy.

Use First 3 Days of School™ 2.0 to strengthen the routines, teacher language, participation, and student ownership behind it.

Then keep building throughout the year inside Teach Like a Top TEN™ with a clear framework, live coaching, and a community that understands the real classroom version.

Your first year is $149, AND 2.0 is included.

Build it FIRST. Manage it SECOND.™

A three-day weekend is NOT three extra teacher workdays. 😂

If one part of your classroom is already taking WAY too much time or energy, pick one moment that isn’t working and build the routine play by play.

Take partner work.
Instead of just saying, “Turn and talk,” decide:

Who talks first? What is the other partner doing while they listen? What should it look and sound like? How will students know they did it well?

👉Then Tuesday: teach it, practice it, give feedback, reflect as a class, and refine it.

Strong routines aren’t created when we have to repeat ourselves and get less than stellar results.
They’re built intentionally.
One moment. One routine. One improvement.

💜 Then close the laptop and enjoy your weekend. 💜

If you want help figuring out what to build, what to strengthen, and what to do next, I put together a special Teach Like a Top TEN™ Labor Day Bundle.

If you’ve repeated the same direction all day, the answer probably isn’t to repeat it one more time. 😂

Before you decide, “My class is SO hard this year,” look closer.

At the end of the day, ask yourself:

1. NOTICE: What exact moment felt off?
2. NARROW: Was it the whole class, one group, or a few students?
3. CHECK: Can students actually demonstrate the routine?
4. RESPOND: Does this moment need more teaching, one adjustment, or individual follow-through?

Reflection isn’t about finding someone to blame. It’s about getting specific enough to make one stronger move tomorrow.

You’re not grading yourself. You’re coaching yourself.

Nothing makes you suddenly question every teaching decision you’ve ever made quite like your principal appearing in the doorway. 😂

Trust me. I’ve been there.
Your principal walks in and suddenly you start talking MORE so they know you know what you’re doing.

Meanwhile, somebody says something completely weird, you can’t find the stack of papers that was literally just in your hand, and now you’re wondering:

Are they engaged enough?Am I talking too much? Was that transition terrible? Why is THAT kid sharpening a pencil right now?! 😂

Eventually, I realized I didn’t need to become a different teacher during a walkthrough.
I needed to build a classroom I felt good teaching in whether anyone was watching or not.

Strong routines.
Students doing the thinking.
Clear expectations.
Real participation.
Students who know how the classroom works.
That’s the goal.
Not the perfect observation lesson.

The “come on in—this is what we do” classroom. 💜

What would make YOU feel more confident when someone walks through your door?

If you’ve said “They should know this by now” more than once today… this is for you. 😂

Most of the time, “they should know” really means:

we found the next routine that needs to be taught, practiced, or strengthened.

Not another lecture.
Not 17 more reminders.
Not “I already told you.”

Teach it. Practice it. Notice it. Reflect. Grow.

That’s how routines actually become routines.

Comment HIDDEN and we will send you the free quiz… You will never miss a routine again! 💜

Before we give teachers 47 different classroom-management strategies… can we figure out what’s actually happening first? 😂

A teacher says:

“My class talks constantly and I’m redirecting all day.”

And then the advice starts:

Reward chart.
Move seats.
Call home.
Be stricter.
Don’t be too strict.
Take away recess.

Meanwhile, the teacher is now MORE overwhelmed.

Before you give advice:

What would you want to know FIRST?

Because “my class talks too much” sounds like one problem.
It could actually be five completely different ones.
