Dear Sophomore Parents,

Why I Believe My Grammar Curriculum Is So Important

Junior year is already the most stressful and academically demanding time for your child— The English section is the biggest part of the test, and it’s heavily weighted in the composite score. Yet most schools have stopped teaching grammar altogether. The curriculum now focuses almost entirely on EOC exams and literature, so students enter test season with almost no foundation in punctuation, sentence structure, verb tense, pronoun usage, or the other rules that make up roughly half the ACT English and SAT Writing & Language sections.

That’s why I see English scores stuck in the low teens or even below the 50th percentile. When students jump straight into ACT prep without the basics, they get overwhelmed. They can’t digest all the rules at once, they guess based on what “sounds right,” and their scores plateau—no matter how many strategies I teach them.

My grammar curriculum fixes that at the root. It is not ACT or SAT prep; it’s the essential foundation that comes before any test prep. I built it from my years in the classroom and structured it in tiered, integrated units so that once a skill is learned, it’s practiced and reinforced in every lesson that follows—just like real language works. It takes 18–20 sessions, but because your child has never had consistent grammar instruction, the payoff is huge: dramatically higher English scores, noticeably stronger writing in school (teachers regularly ask, “Where did you learn to write like this?”), and the confidence that comes from truly understanding how English works.

Sophomore year or early junior year is the ideal time to complete it. That way, when it's time for ACT/SAT prep, they aren't overwhelemd with learning grammar and ACT/SAT strategies. The grammar foundation I provide doesn’t just raise test scores; it gives them a lifelong skill that helps with college essays, scholarship applications, and every piece of writing they’ll ever do.

If you want to give your child the strongest possible start, this is where it begins. I’m happy to send a diagnostic assessment ($50) so you can see exactly where they stand. The grammar curriculum isn’t a shortcut—it’s the solid ground everything else is built on.

I also assist with college essays, both the common application and supplemental ones. I can’t emphasize enough its importance. Since COVID, the number of college applications has increased by 30 percent and the acceptance rates have dropped to historic lows. The essays help not just with getting accepted but with getting merit scholarships.

Unlike other college counselors, I just specialize in the essays, and because I'm foremost an English teacher, I know exactly what it takes to get it DONE with only a couple of rewrites. I have a turnaround period of 24 hours and do not sit on it for weeks. Students need immediate feedback, especially to keep their motivation in full swing.

Common Application prompts are already available, so now is the perfect time to get them started and out of the way, especially since senior year will be so busy with applying to and touring colleges. Supplemental essays (shorter but harder…since they are more specific and they have to say more with fewer words) will be available starting August 1st of their senior year.
It's a completely different process than tutoring. PM to find out more.

While the school ACT will be given online (YUCK), I highly suggest students sign up for any subsequent test with paper/pencil for the following reasons:

1. Easier annotation and navigation: On paper, you can freely write notes, underline key phrases, cross out wrong answers, circle important details, and quickly flip between pages or passages. This is especially helpful for Reading and English sections (where skimming passages and referring back is common) and Science (where data interpretation benefits from marking up graphs/tables). On the digital version, you rely on digital highlighting, flagging questions, and a built-in notepad/scratch work area, which feels more restricted and slower for many students.

2. Better for visual processing and reducing eye strain: Reading long passages on a screen can cause more fatigue or make text slightly harder to scan compared to printed paper. Numerous student reports and tutor recommendations note that comprehension feels more natural on paper, particularly for dense reading passages.

3. No risk of technical problems: Paper eliminates concerns like device glitches, software bugs, slow loading, internet issues at the test center, battery problems (if bringing your own device), or unfamiliar testing software. While ACT's online platform is generally stable, any disruption can add stress.

4. Familiarity and comfort: Most students have far more experience taking paper-based tests throughout school. The paper ACT feels more like routine classroom exams, which can reduce anxiety and allow focus on content rather than interface.

5. Strategy advantages for time management and workload: Paper makes certain techniques easier, such as jotting quick outlines, eliminating choices directly on the test booklet, or physically covering answers. Some experts argue this helps manage mental load better on a fast-paced test like the ACT.

6. Even though the paper/pencil version does not include DESMOS, my partner does magic with the TI-34 calculator! My daughter, who did not ever take Pre-Calc Trig, got a 35 on the Math section with his tutoring.
